Somali PM launches presidential bid ahead of October 30 polls

Mogadishu (HMC) – The Prime Minister of Somalia, Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke, on Monday formally announced his candidacy in the upcoming Somali presidential elections due to be held in October 30.

“Today I announce my candidacy for president. I’m ready to take part in the coming presidential election of our country,” Mr. Sharmarke announced from his office .

Widely expected to be vying for the presidential elections, Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke previously stated that he had yet to decide if he would seek the presidency.

Like his father, Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, Omar is looking to transition from being the nation’s Prime Minister to the President.  His father was Somalia’s first Prime Minister and second President.

Sharmarke twice served as Somalia’s Prime Minister (2009-2010, 2014 – Current), and also served as Somalia’s Ambassador to the United States in 2014.
