13-year-old girl dies as a result of female genital mutilation

A 13-year-old girl living in Jeerinle village under Galkayo city has died of bleeding from female genital mutilation, HMC has confirmed to some of her family members. .

The death of nomadic Fartun Hassan Ahmed, which took place earlier this month, has caught the attention of news agencies. It is the first case of female genital mutilation in Somalia since 2018, following the death of 10-year-old Deeqa Dahir Nur.

“We looked for a car to take us to the hospital, but it did not reach us on time. We did not know what to do. We later found a car, but it died when it arrived, “said Nadifo, Fartun’s mother.”

Nadiifo’s mother said she was with her daughter bleeding early in the morning, until she died at about 4 p.m.

Her father, Hassan Ahmed, a goat herder and visually impaired, said his daughter was a hard worker who helped with the family work.

“She did everything for me. She helped me and cooked food for me and took care of the animals while I was resting,” he said. Her parents said they regretted the decision.

In Somalia, about 98% of female genital mutilation (FGM) is performed when girls reach the age of 10 years.
