Talaado 22-Octo-2024 {HMC} Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in
Kenya on Monday as part of his ongoing regional tour to countries
contributing troops to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia
(ATMIS).
During his visit, President Mohamud will hold talks with Kenyan President
William Ruto to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation and supporting
Somalia’s security transition as the country prepares to take full responsibility
for its national defense.
This visit follows similar discussions with Uganda, Burundi, and Djibouti
leaders earlier this week, focusing on the phased withdrawal of ATMIS forces.
ATMIS is set to conclude its mission by December 2024. It will be replaced in
2025 by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia
(AUSSOM), which will deploy a smaller contingent of about 11,000 troops.
AUSSOM will prioritize securing urban areas and critical infrastructure, while
Somali forces lead national security operations.
