U.S. airstrike targets ISIS militants in northeastern Somalia, backing Puntland forces

Tuesday May 13, 2025 {HMC} U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, carried out an airstrike targeting ISIS militants approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Bosaso in the Bari region.

According to the Somali National News Agency, the operation was launched to support Puntland Security Forces in their ongoing campaign to eradicate ISIS fighters entrenched in the area. The strike is part of a broader counterterrorism effort aimed at degrading the capabilities of extremist groups operating in northeastern Somalia.

Officials have not disclosed the number of militants killed or injured in the strike, citing that the operation is still ongoing and damage assessments are underway.

The Somali government praised the U.S. for its continued partnership, highlighting the critical role international allies play in the country’s fight against terrorism and in strengthening regional security.
