Friday 17 March 2023 {HMC} The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who is presiding over the second day of the meeting of the National Consultative Council, is analyzing the reports submitted by the committees responsible for strengthening the federalization of finance, elections and national security structure.
The meeting was attended by the Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia Mr. Hamse Abdi Barre, Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Salah Jama and the presidents of the regional governments, South-West Mr. Abdazis Hassan Mohamed, Hirshabeelle Mr. Ali Gudlawe Hussein, Jubbaland Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Islam, Galmudug Mr. Ahmed Abdi Kariye and the Governor of Banadir Region and the Mayor of Mogadishu Mr. Yusuf Hussein Jimale.
The president of Puntland, Saeed Abdullah Deni, is absent from this meeting because he refused to attend due to a strong disagreement with the senior leaders of the DF.
A committee from the DFS and the regional governments except Puntland met in Baidoa, the meeting before the forum discussed the unification of the country’s elections and other issues.
The committees agreed, after long discussions, on the points which include
1- That the South West & Puntland presidential elections take place in January 2024.
2- That the presidential elections of Galmudug, Hirshabeelle & Jubbaland administrations take place in December 2024.
3- That the elections of the President & Parliament of Somalia take place in May 2026.
However, the parties failed to agree on the type of elections that will take place in Somalia in 2026, leaving it to the leaders of the DFS and the regional governments that are currently meeting in the DF.
