Kenya says US Vice President Vance has cancelled planned visit

Tuesday November 11, 2025(HMC) Southwest regional state President Abdiasis Mohamed Laftagareen and former Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People Mohamed Mursal Abdirahman have ended their long-running political dispute following a reconciliation meeting in Nairobi on Monday.

The talks were facilitated by Member of Parliament Aden Mohamed Nur (Saransoor), former MP Samira Hassan Abdulle, and several close associates of President Laftagareen. The meeting marked the first face-to-face dialogue between the two influential political figures after years of tensions that had deepened divisions within the Southwest administration.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, President Laftagareen said both sides agreed to “put aside their differences” and focus on “unity, solidarity, and development” in the Southwest State and Somalia at large.

“I met with my brother Speaker Mohamed Mursal in Nairobi today, and we agreed to resolve our differences and work together for the unity, solidarity, and progress of the Southwest State and the Somali nation,” Laftagareen wrote.

The reconciliation is being viewed as a significant step toward restoring political cooperation within the Southwest regional administration. The two leaders had previously clashed over governance and political control in Baidoa, where Laftagareen’s administration had reportedly blocked Mursal from visiting on multiple occasions.

Observers say the renewed cooperation could ease political tensions in Baidoa and strengthen coordination between regional and federal political actors at a time when Somalia continues to navigate complex security and governance challenges.
