Farmaajo urges Somali leaders, business community to aid drought-stricken families

Thursday  27, Nov 2025 {HMC} – Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has urged Somali business leaders and religious scholars to step up support for drought-affected communities amid a worsening humanitarian crisis.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, Farmaajo said thousands of vulnerable families have not received adequate assistance over the past two years, and their situation continues to deteriorate. He appealed to Somalis at home and abroad especially scholars, businesspeople, and the diaspora to mobilize resources as international aid has sharply declined and no longer meets the urgent needs on the ground.

Farmaajo also called on leaders of the Federal Government and Federal Member States to work together in responding to the crisis. He expressed hope that the international community would accelerate relief efforts to reach the most affected populations.
Somalia is facing a rapidly worsening drought, with large parts of the country severely parched following four consecutive failed rainy seasons. Millions are now at risk of hunger and displacement, according to UN humanitarian agencies.

On 10 November, the Federal Government formally declared a drought emergency and appealed for urgent international assistance as conditions continue to worsen across northern, central, and southern regions.
