Wednesday, 3 December 2025 The State Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia, Cali Cumar (Cali Balcad), posted on his X account a statement that many people interpreted as a response from the government to U.S. President Donald Trump, who in recent days has repeatedly launched verbal attacks against Somali Americans and the Somali government—describing Somalia as a country without a government, without a military, and without any functioning system.
The statement issued by the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Cali Balcad, read as follows:
“For some people, it has become very easy to use Somalia as an excuse or to hide their failures behind it. This narrative is not only false, but it is also an insult to our resilience and our sacrifices. We must show unity, protect our dignity, and show the world that we are not something anyone can misuse as they wish.”
It is still unclear whether this statement is directly in response to Trump’s recent remarks about Somalia.
Cali Balcad’s remarks come at a time when President Trump, who has used harsh language against Somalis, has repeatedly claimed that Somalia is a collapsed state, leaderless and decaying.
