Sunday 4, Jan 2026 {HMC} The African Union continues with deep concern the recent events in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, including reports about the kidnapping of the President of the Republic, Mr. Nicolás Maduro, as well as military attacks on Venezuelan institutions.
The African Union reaffirms its firm commitment to the fundamental principles of international law, in particular respect for the sovereignty of States, their territorial integrity and the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
The African Union emphasizes the importance of dialogue, peaceful resolution of disputes and respect for constitutional and institutional frameworks in a spirit of good neighbourhood, cooperation and peaceful coexistence among nations.
The African Union emphasizes that the complex internal challenges facing Venezuela can only be addressed sustainably through an inclusive political dialogue among the Venezuelans themselves.
The African Union expresses its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reiterates its commitment to promoting peace, stability and mutual respect between nations and regions.
The African Union calls on all stakeholders to act with moderation, responsibility and respect for international law, in order to avoid any escalation and preserve regional peace and stability.
