Saturday 24 Jun 2025 {HMC} Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency has arrested five As militants accused of planning to infiltrate Mogadishu and carry out attacks targeting the capital’s security and stability, the agency said Friday.
In a statement, NISA said the arrests followed a planned intelligence-led operation after authorities closely monitored the activities of the network, which it said was operating as part of the al-Shabab militant group.
The agency said it seized explosives, weapons and vehicles believed to have been prepared for use in terrorist attacks. No further details were released about the locations of the arrests or the specific targets allegedly planned by the suspects.
NISA said the detained suspects will be referred to judicial authorities for prosecution in accordance with Somalia’s legal system.
The agency credited cooperation from the public for helping disrupt the alleged plot and urged citizens to continue sharing information related to security threats.
“NISA thanks Somali citizens for their continued cooperation and support,” the statement said, calling on the public to report any suspicious activity or information linked to As or the Islamic State group through the agency’s official reporting channels.
As , an al-Qaida-linked militant group, has carried out repeated attacks in Mogadishu and other parts of Somalia, often targeting government institutions, security forces and civilians. Somali authorities, backed by international partners, have intensified intelligence and military operations aimed at disrupting the group’s networks and preventing attacks in urban centers.
