Wednesday Febr 11, 2026 {HMC} Somalia’s elite Danab Special Forces, working alongside Jubaland state security forces, killed 14 al-Shabab fighters in a planned operation Tuesday in areas under Jamaame town in the Lower Juba region, security officials said.
Officials said one additional militant was wounded, while others fled the area as troops advanced during the coordinated raid.
The operation targeted suspected al-Shabab positions in rural areas around Jamaame, a district in Lower Juba where the al-Qaida-linked group has maintained influence despite sustained military pressure from federal and regional forces.
The Ministry of Defence and the Somali National Army command said the mission was part of an ongoing campaign to dismantle al-Shabab’s operational presence in southern Somalia.
“The armed forces remain committed to eliminating al-Shabab militants and ensuring lasting peace and stability for the Somali people,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that such coordinated operations will continue.
Danab, a U.S.-trained special forces unit within the Somali National Army, has played a central role in high-risk operations targeting al-Shabab leadership, training camps and supply routes. Jubaland forces have also conducted parallel security operations in Lower Juba as part of broader efforts to stabilize the region.
Al-Shabab has waged an insurgency against Somalia’s federal government for more than 16 years, frequently targeting security forces, government officials and civilians in its bid to overthrow the state and impose its interpretation of Islamic law.
