Saturday July 19 {HMC} Somalia and Ethiopia opened a high-level technical review meeting Friday in Addis Ababa to assess progress on agreements made during their inaugural Joint Ministerial Committee meeting held earlier in Mogadishu.
The talks bring together officials from both governments, with the Somali delegation led by the Director General for East African Social Affairs. The meeting is focused on evaluating how far both countries have come in implementing joint commitments and identifying areas that require further action.
Key points of discussion include strengthening cooperation between the Somali and Ethiopian people, expanding trade and economic partnerships, and building momentum toward more integrated bilateral relations.
The review is seen as a critical step in the ongoing effort by both governments to turn diplomatic pledges into practical outcomes. It underscores their shared intention to build lasting stability and prosperity in the region.
The renewed talks come after both nations agreed to fully restore diplomatic ties and address longstanding tensions over Ethiopia’s quest for sea access—particularly through a proposed port in Somaliland. Relations had soured following a controversial port agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland, which Somalia condemned as a violation of its sovereignty.
A breakthrough deal, brokered by Turkey, helped ease tensions and set the stage for a new chapter in Somali-Ethiopian relations. The agreement includes plans to strengthen cooperation in infrastructure, trade, and investment as part of broader efforts to stabilize the Horn of Africa.
