Saturday July 19 {HMC} Jubbaland security officials have presented a former Al-Shabaab member who surrendered to authorities in the Afmadow district, citing deteriorating conditions within the militant group.
Hussein Abuukar Mohamed, also known as Hussein Burgaan, turned himself in voluntarily, saying he could no longer endure life under Al-Shabaab. In an interview with Jubbaland state media, Burgaan described harsh conditions, constant fear, and lack of support as key reasons for his defection.
“I could not bear the situation I was in,” he said. “There is no help, no care—everything is fear and constant pressure.”
Jubbaland security forces confirmed Burgaan’s surrender and said he would be subject to further investigation.
A spokesperson for the security forces said the defection reflects the growing shift in areas once dominated by the militant group. He emphasized that Jubbaland welcomes those who abandon Al-Shabaab and commit to reintegrating into society.
“Jubbaland forces remain committed to defeating Al-Shabaab and encouraging those who wish to return to normal life,” the spokesperson added.
Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaida-linked militant group, is designated a terrorist organization by the United Nations, the United States, and other international actors. The group continues to carry out attacks across Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa.
