Somalia welcomes United States-Iran ceasefire agreement

Thursday 9 April 2026 {HMC} Somalia on Wednesday welcomed a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, calling it a significant step toward easing tensions and safeguarding regional and international stability.

In a statement issued in Mogadishu, the Federal Government said that, as a member of the United Nations Security Council, Somalia views the ceasefire as an important and timely move toward de-escalation, confidence-building and the preservation of peace and security.

The government commended the United States for what it described as leadership in advancing restraint and dialogue, and acknowledged Iran’s engagement in supporting diplomatic efforts. It also expressed appreciation to Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt for their mediation roles, saying their efforts contributed meaningfully to reaching the agreement.
Somalia, which is strategically located along the Red Sea and near key Gulf shipping routes, emphasized the importance of implementing the ceasefire and maintaining structured dialogue aimed at achieving a comprehensive and sustainable resolution.

“The security of maritime routes and the uninterrupted flow of international trade remain vital to regional stability and global economic resilience,” the statement said.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, respect for sovereignty and the central role of diplomacy in addressing international crises. It also stressed adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter, including the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Somalia said the ceasefire should serve not as an endpoint but as a foundation for lasting peace built on dialogue, mutual respect and shared responsibility. The government added that it stands ready to support international efforts to consolidate peace, reduce tensions and promote stability in the region.
