The execution was carried out by firing squad in a public square in Baidoa, the capital of Bay region, following a ruling by the 60th Division Military Court. The court ordered the execution as retribution for the killing of the victim, identified as Abdiwahab Abdirahman Yusuf.
The event was attended by senior officials from the South West administration, military officers, and relatives of both the victim and the convicted soldier.

Speaking at the scene, South West Security Minister Hassan Abdukadir said the verdict sends a strong message to security forces, urging them to use their weapons to protect civilians and fight enemies, rather than abusing the people they are sworn to defend.

In a related ruling, the 60th Military Court also sentenced Salad Ibrahim Hussein, also known as Salaad Yare, to two years in military prison after convicting him of involvement in banditry along the Bay–Gedo road. The court said his actions led to the killing and injury of civilians.
