Trump says trade talks with Canada terminated over Reagan advertisement
Friday 24, Oct 2025 {HMC} United States President Donald Trump said all trade talks with Canada have been terminated following what he called a fraudulent television advertisement in which the late President Ronald Reagan spoke negatively about tariffs.
“The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform late on Thursday.
“The ad was for $75,000. They only did this to interfere with the decision of the US Supreme Court, and other courts,” Trump wrote.
“Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED,” Trump added.
Earlier on Thursday, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute said on social media that a TV advertisement created by the government of Ontario in Canada “misrepresents the ‘Presidential Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade’ dated April 25, 1987.”
The foundation also said that Ontario had not received its permission “to use and edit the remarks” of the late US president.
The foundation added that it was “reviewing legal options in this matter” and invited the public to watch the unedited video of Reagan’s address.
Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford said earlier this week that the advertisement in question – featuring President Reagan criticising tariffs on foreign goods while saying they caused job losses and trade wars – had caught Trump’s attention.
“I heard that the president heard our ad. I’m sure he wasn’t too happy,” Ford said on Tuesday.
In an earlier post on social media, Ford posted a link to the advertisement and the message: “Using every tool we have, we’ll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada. The way to prosperity is by working together,” he said.
Trump’s announcement on the end of trade talks also followed after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he aimed to double his country’s exports to countries outside the US because of the threat posed by the Trump administration’s tariffs.
Carney also told reporters that Canada would not allow unfair US access to its markets if talks on various trade deals with Washington fail.
Canada and the US have been in talks for weeks on a potential deal after Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium and autos earlier this year, prompting Canada to respond in kind.
The Canadian prime minister’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s announcement that all talks had ended because of the advertisement.
More than three-quarters of Canadian exports go to the US, and nearly 3.6 billion Canadian dollars ($2.7bn) worth of goods and services cross the border daily.

Water Minister meets Saudi, Somali counterparts to enhance water cooperation
Friday 24, Oct 2025 {HMC}Yasser bin Ibrahim Humaidan, Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs, met with Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen AlFadhley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on the sidelines of the fifth session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ministers Responsible for Water, held in Jeddah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The meeting discussed means to strengthen cooperation between the two kingdoms in managing water resources, enhancing their sustainability, and expanding the use of innovation and modern technologies in water production and distribution. The two sides also reviewed opportunities for exchanging expertise in desalination, treatment, and water reuse, and in developing water and energy infrastructure projects that support water security in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
Minister Humaidan affirmed Bahrain’s commitment to further enhance cooperation with Saudi Arabia, highlighting the strong relations between the two kingdoms. He praised Saudi Arabia’s leading role in supporting joint regional efforts and initiatives aimed at achieving water sustainability.
For his part, Al Fadhely welcomed Bahrain’s participation in the meeting and expressed Saudi Arabia’s keenness to strengthen bilateral cooperation and exchange expertise in the fields of water and energy, in support of regional water security efforts.
Minister Humaidan also met with Abdullahi Bidhaan Warsame, Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The meeting discussed means to enhance bilateral cooperation in the water sector and to exchange expertise in water resources management.
Both sides reviewed cooperation opportunities in developing water networks, improving resource efficiency, and advancing desalination and storage technologies. They also discussed means to benefit from Bahrain’s expertise in groundwater management and water quality improvement.
The two ministers agreed to form a joint technical team to study future cooperation opportunities in developing water networks, desalination, and the exchange of technical and administrative expertise, in support of sustainable water resources management.

Kenya and Somalia discuss strengthening bilateral ties and regional security
Friday 24, Oct 2025 {HMC} Kenyan Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi met with Somali Ambassador to Kenya Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle on Wednesday to discuss bilateral relations and ways to enhance peace and security in the Horn of Africa.
In a statement shared via his official X account, Mudavadi emphasized that peace and security are central to Africa’s progress, noting that regional stability is the foundation for sustainable growth, trade, and people-to-people integration.
“Peace and security stand at the heart of Africa’s progress, creating the foundation for people-to-people movement and unlocking opportunities that strengthen diplomatic and economic ties across the continent. Kenya remains steadfast in advancing the continent’s stability, guided by the spirit of unity and cooperation, and anchored on the rich historical bonds we share with our neighbors and partners,” Mudavadi stated.

Somalia to hold local elections in Mogadishu on November 30
Friday 24, Oct 2025 {HMC}The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) has announced that local elections in Mogadishu will officially begin on November 30, 2025, following the completion of voter registration.
Commission Chairman Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan told Somali National Television on Friday that 918,890 citizens have successfully registered to vote in the Banadir Regional Administration.
“We have reached a figure that is a good sign and a strong start,” Hassan said, describing the turnout as a clear indication of the public’s desire to reclaim its political rights after decades under a clan-based electoral system.
He added that the Commission expects a large voter turnout on election day, noting that 69 percent of registered voters are between 18 and 34 years old — highlighting the growing influence of Somalia’s youth in shaping the country’s democratic future. The registered electorate is composed of 62 percent men and 38 percent women, marking a new milestone for electoral inclusion.
Chairman Hassan also confirmed that the Commission has made substantial progress toward establishing a multi-party system, having registered 14 political associations so far.
“Registration and certification of political associations are ongoing, ensuring a competitive multi-party system for the upcoming polls,” he said.
Despite the announcement, major opposition groups — including Puntland and Jubbaland states — have declared that they will boycott the elections, accusing the federal government of managing the process unilaterally.
The Commission said its current focus is on finalizing logistical arrangements, voter education, and securing polling centers to ensure that the Banadir vote is transparent, peaceful, and reflective of the community’s mandate for direct democracy.

EU and Egypt call for greater international support to strengthen stability in Somalia
Friday 24, Oct 2025 {HMC} – The European Union (EU) and the Government of Egypt have jointly called for increased international support for Somalia, emphasizing the importance of global cooperation and the participation of new donors in the country’s stabilization efforts.
The EU and Egypt reiterated their commitment to strengthening the Federal Government of Somalia’s state-building, security, and military reform initiatives. Both sides also voiced concern about the continued threat posed by the al-Shabaab militant group and its destabilizing impact on the Horn of Africa.
The EU welcomed Egypt’s plans to participate in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) as part of ongoing efforts to promote peace and security. Egypt announced its participation in December 2024, four months after signing a military cooperation protocol with Somalia. At the time, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said the deployment followed “a request from the Somali government and the approval of the African Union Peace and Security Council.”
Egyptian troops are expected to arrive in Somalia in the coming weeks, despite AUSSOM facing persistent funding challenges.
