High-level conference to finalize SSC-Khaatumo State officially opens in Las Anod town
Monday July 14 2025 {HMC} A high-level conference to finalize the formation of the newly recognized SSC-Khaatumo regional state officially opened on Sunday in Las Anod, the administrative capital of the Sool region.
The event was attended by senior national and regional leaders, including Second Deputy Speaker of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament, Senator Abdullahi Timacadde; Federal Minister of Interior Ali Yusuf Ali (Xoosh); SSC-Khaatumo leader Abdikhadir Ahmed Aw-Ali Firdhiye; several federal ministers; and members of parliament.
Traditional leaders from SSC-Khaatumo, official delegates, and representatives from various sectors of society also participated in the conference, which marks a critical milestone in establishing institutional governance and federal representation for the region.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Interior Minister Ali Xoosh emphasized the national importance of the conference.
“The work underway in Las Anod is essential to Somalia’s state-building and national unity,” said Minister Xoosh. “The SSC-Khaatumo community has made a bold decision to form a legitimate regional state, grounded in a constitution that reflects the will of its people. The Federal Government supports this process as a step toward unity, development, and restoring public trust in the government.”
Minister Xoosh noted two key priorities of the conference: completing the structure of the regional state and laying the foundation for democratic elections.
The conference is expected to formalize SSC-Khaatumo’s transition from an interim authority to a full-fledged federal member state. The Federal Government of Somalia officially recognized SSC-Khaatumo earlier this year, following months of conflict with Somaliland forces and significant shifts in political alliances across northern Somalia.
Danab commandos kill senior Al-Shabaab leader in Lower Shabelle region
Monday July 14 2025 {HMC} Somali National Army (SNA) commandos have killed a senior Al-Shabaab leader in a targeted operation in the Toratorow area of the Lower Shabelle region, the military confirmed on Sunday.
The operation, led by the elite Danab special forces, resulted in the death of Abdullahi Mohamed, known within the group as “Arab,” who was in charge of Zakawaat—the group’s extortion and taxation wing in the region.
According to a statement issued by the Somali National Army, the operation was “successful and executed as planned.”
“During the operation, Danab forces destroyed the motorcycle he was using and seized a large amount of money and vouchers that were being extorted from the residents of Toratorow,” the statement added.
The operation is part of a broader offensive by the Somali military against Al-Shabaab in Lower Shabelle, aimed at dismantling the group’s financial networks and leadership.
Al-Shabaab has used extortion to fund its insurgency across southern and central Somalia for years. The Somali government, with support from international partners, has ramped up military campaigns to weaken the group’s grip on rural communities.
Somali Foreign Minister attends AU Mid-Year Coordination Summit in Malabo
Monday July 14 2025 {HMC} Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, attended the African Union (AU) Mid-Year Coordination Summit (MYCM) held Sunday in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
The high-level summit brought together leaders from the African Union, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and AU member states to enhance strategic coordination and accelerate progress on the continent’s shared development goals.
Minister Abdisalam, who led the Somali delegation, emphasized the importance of collective responsibility, sustainable peace, and inclusive regional integration as foundational pillars for Africa’s advancement.
He reaffirmed Somalia’s strong commitment to the AU’s Agenda 2063 and called for justice, dignity, and equality for all African people, including those of African descent globally.
The MYCM was established in 2017 as the primary platform for aligning and coordinating the efforts of the AU and the RECs toward continental integration. It replaced the AU’s traditional June/July summits and serves as a meeting point for the AU Assembly Bureau, REC chairpersons, the AU Commission, and Regional Mechanisms (RMs).
