Puntland calls for unity in fight against ISIS, condemn attacks on foreigners.
Tuesday 28,Jan 2025 {HMC} Puntland authorities have warned that action will be taken against individuals found harming foreigners as the regional administration continues its crackdown on ISIS in the Bari region.
Speaking to reporters in Garowe on Monday, Puntland’s Minister of Information, Mahmoud Aydid Dirir, urged the public to support the government’s efforts against illegally present foreigners. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between citizens and security forces in maintaining stability.
The minister’s statement followed reports of Ethiopian nationals being targeted and harassed by angry residents in Garowe.
Puntland recently detained hundreds of illegal immigrants within its territory, citing concerns that some may join terrorist groups such as ISIS, which the government says threatens regional security.
U.S. military officials and Somali security experts reported that IS increased its membership numbers in Somalia last year. The group, previously estimated to have between 100 and 400 fighters, now has an estimated 500 to 600 members, according to Somali intelligence.

Somali Foreign Minister confirms Egypt’s participation in AUSSOM mission
Tuesday 28,Jan 2025 {HMC} Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi confirmed on Monday that Egypt will deploy troops to Somalia under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and through a bilateral agreement with the Somali government.
In an interview with TeN TV, Minister Fiqi acknowledged the resistance from certain people against Egypt’s participation in the operation. Opponents have raised concerns about the potential impact of the longstanding Egyptian-Ethiopian tensions on Somalia’s stability.
However, Minister Fiqi stressed the importance of Egypt’s involvement in combating terrorism and reforming the Somali National Army.
“The Somali people must accept that the Egyptian army will be part of this operation. Their participation will lead to unprecedented successes in the fight against terrorism,” he stated.
Fiqi highlighted Somalia’s ongoing recovery from past conspiracies and its current focus on eradicating terrorism, particularly ISIS and al-Shabaab. He praised Egypt’s commitment to supporting Somalia in its counter-terrorism efforts, noting that the two nations recently strengthened their cooperation to combat al-Shabaab.
The collaboration was cemented during final technical discussions on the African Union’s AUSSOM mission, which began its five-year mandate earlier this year. Somalia’s Defense Ministry reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to assisting Somalia in stabilizing the country and defeating terrorist groups.

Jubbaland military court begins trial of officer accused of collaborating with AS
Tuesday 28,Jan 2025 {HMC} The Jubbaland military court on Monday commenced proceedings against Mukhtar Abdi Adan (Hoobiye), a former officer in the Jubbaland Armed Forces accused of collaborating with the AS militant group.
During the hearing, the court reviewed the charges against Adan. The Attorney General of the Jubbaland Armed Forces, Colonel Ismail Abdi Ali, alleged that the accused began working with AS in 2021, providing sensitive information about Jubbaland’s military operations to the group.
The court’s chairman, Colonel Abdullahi Mahmud Ibrahim, questioned Adan about the allegations, but the defendant denied the charges.
The court session was adjourned, with Chairman Ibrahim announcing that further hearings would be scheduled to continue examining the case against Mukhtar Abdi Adan.
The case underscores ongoing efforts by Jubbaland authorities to hold accountable those accused of aiding Al-Shabaab, which continues to pose significant security challenges in the region, the court said.

Somali army and local forces recapture Beera Yabaal in Hiiraan region
Tuesday 28,Jan 2025 {HMC} Somali National Army (SNA) troops, supported by local clan militias, recaptured the Beera Yabaal area and its surrounding areas in the Hiiraan region on Monday after hours of intense fighting with Al-Shabaab militants.
Beera Yabaal is a rural area situated between Buula Burte and Halgan districts, areas where Al-Shabaab fighters have reportedly been regrouping in recent days.
According to preliminary reports, the operation dealt losses to Al-Shabaab. Defense Minister Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur praised the efforts of the Somali forces and local militias in defeating the militants.
“Today, a major defeat was inflicted on the Khawarij in Hiiraan region. I thank the heroes of the army forces and the people of Hiiraan,” said Defense Minister Nur, using a term commonly employed by Somali officials to describe Al-Shabaab.
While no official casualty figures have been released, the group has not issued a statement regarding the clashes.
