Jubaland votes for leadership as political fault lines deepen across Somalia.

0

Thursday 21,Nov 2024 {HMC} Jubaland’s parliament is electing its new leadership on Thursday to select a parliamentary speaker and two deputy speakers. Candidates are presenting their platforms, followed by voting and the swearing-in of the winners. The election marks a critical step ahead of Jubaland’s presidential vote scheduled for November 25, as the region moves forward with its electoral calendar despite federal objections.

Jubaland’s Boundary and Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Mursal Siyad Mohamed, confirmed that preparations remain on track. “These elections are essential for maintaining stability and continuity in Jubaland’s governance,” he said, dismissing federal criticisms as politically motivated.

Mogadishu has strongly opposed Jubaland’s decision to conduct independent elections, emphasizing the need for a unified national electoral process managed by a centralized commission. The federal government insists that a one-person, one-vote system is vital for fostering accountability and national cohesion.

Somalia’s international partners have also raised alarms over the escalating tensions between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Jubaland State, calling for urgent de-escalation and a return to constructive dialogue.

However, Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam, widely known as Ahmed Madobe, maintains that the federal government is overreaching. Earlier this year, he appointed an independent electoral commission, which Mogadishu condemned as unconstitutional, citing Madobe’s expired mandate. Jubaland, in turn, severed ties with the federal government, accusing it of undermining regional autonomy and failing to support crucial security operations.

Political analysts argue that the electoral dispute highlights deeper tensions over power-sharing between Somalia’s federal government and its member states. “This is not just about elections,” said political analyst Mohamed Mukhtar. “It’s about defining the boundaries of federal and regional authority, an issue that has long plagued Somalia’s governance.”

Jubaland leaders have repeatedly dismissed the feasibility of a one-person, one-vote system, citing ongoing security challenges. President Madobe has also rejected term extensions for regional leaders, accusing Mogadishu of using electoral reforms as a pretext for centralizing power.

The current standoff mirrors past disputes, including Jubaland’s contested 2019 presidential election, which saw Madobe re-elected amid federal government opposition. Mediation efforts by Kenya and other actors have so far yielded little progress.

Observers believe Jubaland’s leadership, under Madobe’s seasoned command, is likely to maintain its autonomy, as it has in previous disputes. “Madobe has consistently navigated federal resistance with strategic finesse,” Mukhtar added.

Somaliland’s president-elect faces Ethiopia coastal deal challenges amid regional tensions.

0

Thursday, 21,Nov 2024 {HMC} Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro has been elected Somaliland’s new president, securing 64% of the vote in a landmark election praised for its transparency. His presidency begins as Somaliland faces mounting regional tensions, including strained relations with Somalia and scrutiny over a controversial agreement with Ethiopia granting access to its coastline.

Irro, leader of the opposition Waddani Party, triumphed over incumbent Muse Bihi Abdi, who secured just 35% of the vote. The November 13 election marked Somaliland’s sixth presidential transition since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991. Despite delays caused by political disputes, the process was praised by international observers, including Ethiopia and the United States, as a rare beacon of democracy in the Horn of Africa.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in December 2023 between Somaliland and Ethiopia was a centrepiece of the election campaign. Under the agreement, Ethiopia would lease a 20-kilometer stretch of Somaliland’s coastline for economic and military purposes. In return, Ethiopia pledged to support Somaliland’s decades-long pursuit of international recognition.

Irro has pledged to review the MoU, emphasizing that any agreement must prioritize Somaliland’s sovereignty and development. “We will ensure that any partnership serves the interests of Somaliland,” said Mahmoud Adan Jama, Waddani Party spokesperson. Irro’s measured stance reflects his intention to balance regional cooperation with protecting Somaliland’s autonomy.

Irro will officially take office on December 13, following Somaliland’s constitutionally mandated one-month transition period. During this time, election results will be certified, disputes resolved, and preparations made for the inauguration ceremony, which traditionally draws dignitaries from East Africa and Western diplomats based in Nairobi and Mogadishu.

Maxay yihiin gantaallada Storm Shadow ee Ukraine ay ku garaacday Ruushka?

Khamiis 21, Nov 2024 {HMC} Ukraine ayaa markii ugu horeysay gantaalada riddada dheer ee Storm Shadow ee UK ku riday bartilmaameedyo ku yaala gudaha Ruushka, sida ay muujinayso xog la helay.

Dalka ay dagaalladu aafeeyeen ayaa hore loogu xaddiday in uu gudaha Ruushka u isticmaalo gantaallada riddada dheer.

Wararka ku saabsan duqeymahan ayaa imaanaya ka dib markii Ukraine la siiyay ogolaanshaha adeegsiga hubka Washington ee gantaalada riddada dheer.

Dawladdu way diiday inay ka hadasho wararkaas sababo la xiriira hawl-galada socda, balse saraakiisha ayaa xaqiijiyey in Xoghayaha Difaaca John Healey uu la hadlay dhiggiisa Ukraine habeenimadii Talaadada.

Wasiiradu waxay u badan tahay inay si taxadar leh uga jawaabaan warbixinada sababo la xiriira walaaca laga qabo falcelinta Ruushka, iyo sidoo kale in la hubiyo in tallabadaasi aan loo arkin mid ay hogaaminayso UK.

Wasiirka Difaaca ee Ukraine Rustem Umerov ayaa sidoo kale diiday inuu xaqiijiyo in dalkiisu uu u adeegsaday gantaalaha Storm Shadow ee gudaha dhulka Ruushka, balse wuxuu yiri“isticmaalayaan wax kasta oo ay ku difaacayaan dalkeena”.

Matthew Miller, oo ah afhayeenka Wasaaradda Arrimaha Dibadda ee Mareykanka, kama hadli doono adeegsiga gantaalka ay UK ama haddii Mareykanku uu Ukraine ka caawin doono isticmaakooda.

in Ukraine ay kala tashanayso ama ay ku wargelinayso Maraykanka isticmaalka gantaallada ay bixiso UK, Mr Miller waxa uu sheegay in aanu “si cad uga hadli doonin isticmaalka hubka waddan kale”.

Gantaalada UK ee loo yaqaano Storm Shadow waxaa loo arkaa inay yihiin hub ku habboon in lagu duqeeyo goobaha ay hubka ku keydsan yihiin , sida kuwa uu Ruushku u isticmaalo dagaalka uu kula jiro Ukraine.

Maraykanka iyo UK hore uma aysan siinin ogolaansho, iyadoo la soo jeediyay in tani ay la xiriirto in aan la rabin in dagaalka uu soo balaarto.

Laakiin dhamaadkii toddobaadka, madaxweynaha Mareykanka Joe Biden wuxuu uu u fasaxay Ukraine isticmaalka gantalada riddada dheer ee uu Mareykanka horey u siiyay.

Hubkan loo yaqaano Atacm ayay Ukraine u adeegsatay lana beegsatay Talaadadii gobolka Bryansk ee xuduudka la leh Ruushka.

Mareykanka ayaa sidoo kale ansixiyay in loo diro miinada dhulka Ukraine, si loo hakiyo ciidamada dalka Ruushka.

Isagoo ka hadlayay shirka G20 ee ka dhacaya Rio de Janeiro Talaadadii, Ra’iisul Wasaaraha UK Sir Starmer ayaa sheegay in UK “ay xaqiijin doonto in Ukraine ay hesho waxa loo baahan yahay iyo inta loo baahan yahay”.

Vladimir Putin ayaa ansixiyay isbeddelo lagu sameeyo adeegsiga Nukliyeerka ee Ruushka, isaga oo dejiyay shuruudo cusub oo uu waddanku ku tixgalinayo adeegsiga hubkiisa.

Nidamkan cusub ayaa qeexaya haddii weerar ka yimaada dowlad aan Nukliyeer lahayn, oo ay taageerto quwadda nukliyeerka, waxaa loola dhaqmayaa sidii weerar wadajir ah oo lagu qaaday Ruushka.

Waa maxay Storm Shadow?

Storm Shadow waa gantaallaha riddada dheer oo lagu sameeyay Faransiiska isla markaana gooshi kara 250km (155 meyl). Faransiiska ayaa u yaqaanna Scalp.

Waxaa laga soo ganaa diyaarad, kadibna wuxuuna ku duulaa xawaare u dhigma kan dhawaqa, kadibna dhulka ayuu kusoo dhacaa isagoo qarxiya madaxiisa aadka u qarxa.

Storm Shadow – oo ay sameysay shirkadda MBDA – ayaa loo arkaa hub aad u dhex geli kara keydadka hubka, sida kuwa ay Ruushka u adeegsadaan dagaalkooda Ukraine.

Balse gantaal walba wuxuu qiimihiisu yahay US$1m (£767,000), sidaa darteed waxaa keliya loo adeegsadaa qorshooyin gaar ah oo dagaalka.

‘Bigger cause’ of civil war drives Sudan’s Afcon dream.

0

Wednesday 20, Nov 2024 {HMC}  With no end in sight to the civil war in Sudan, the country’s footballers have offered a glimmer of hope to their compatriots thanks to their unlikely qualification for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces militia began in April last year and has forced over 11 million people from their homes.

Aid workers say it has created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis – with the leading cause of death across the country being preventable disease and starvation.

Yet despite that backdrop, coupled with being forced to play their home ties outside of Sudan and the suspension of the domestic league, the Falcons of Jediane will represent their nation at the 2025 Afcon in Morocco.

“It’s something that’s consistently in our minds. Our families are still affected by the war,” forward Abobakar Eisa told Newsday on the BBC World Service.

“The manager always says: ‘When you’re putting on the shirt, you don’t just do it for your family and yourselves. You do it for everyone else’s family, and everyone in Sudan – for your whole country – to lift their spirits up.’

“We’re doing that through football, which is a beautiful thing. We know we’re playing for a much bigger cause.”

A draft United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Sudan has been vetoed by Russia – a move which British foreign secretary David Lammy described as a “disgrace”.

Meanwhile, a recent study says the number of people killed since the conflict started is significantly higher than previously reported, with United States special envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello saying some estimates suggested up to 150,000 people had been killed.

“[My] family had to migrate to Egypt because you could walk out in the street and there’d be gunshots, or there’d be gunshots flying through windows or walls,” Eisa said.

“It’s very, very dangerous. We’re hoping it gets settled quickly, so people can find peace.

“It’s painful to speak about these things, but you have to think that things are going to get better.”

Upsetting the odds – and Ghana

Sudan have been well supported in their ‘home’ games in the 2025 Afcon campaign

Sudan, ranked 110th in the world, were third seeds in their group when the 2025 Afcon qualifying draw was made in July.

However, taking four points from a double-header against four-time Nations Cup winners Ghana last month put the team, which is coached by former Black Stars player and manager Kwesi Appiah, a point away from reaching the finals.

Appiah’s side fell to a damaging 4-0 defeat away against Niger last week, but Eisa said the squad remained positive heading into their final game against already-qualified Angola on Monday.

“The Niger game took us by surprise,” the 28-year-old, who plays his club football in Thailand, explained.

“On the way home, we said to ourselves we’re more than capable. We knew we had pressure, but at the same time we knew we could get the job done.”

Sudan ground out a 0-0 draw in Benghazi, at their makeshift home stadium, to seal second spot in Group F.

Eisa said the side have fed off the support of the Sudanese diaspora in their two qualifiers hosted in Libya – as well as local supporters – after starting their campaign in South Sudan.

“We’ve had a really big following,” he added.

“Obviously it’s not home, it’s not Sudan, but at the same time it does feel like that with the support that they show and bring to us.

“[Against Angola it] was very loud. We couldn’t hear ourselves.”

Taking on the continent
The delayed 2021 Afcon was Sudan’s most recent outing at the continental showpiece, a campaign that ended in the group stage.

“As a kid, you grow up watching Africa Cup of Nations,” said Eisa, who was not involved last time around.

“To actually be a part of history, and with what’s going on in Sudan, is an amazing feeling.”

Next year’s finals in Morocco will not kick off until 21 December, a delay which Eisa described as “annoying” given the mood amongst the squad.

Yet, despite their handicaps, Sudan are also performing admirably in preliminaries for the 2026 Fifa World Cup.

They sit top of Group B, ahead of 2021 Afcon winners Senegal and two-time continental champions DR Congo, with the group winners assured of a place at the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

The Teranga Lions are scheduled to travel to face Sudan in March’s international window.

“Our attention quickly goes to that game,” Eisa said.

“It’s like we’ve actually got no time to think about the Afcon at this moment. Senegal are probably the favourites of the group, so we need to show what we’re about.”

With the Nations Cup to look forward to, booking a first-ever World Cup appearance would be all the more remarkable given Sudan’s circumstances – and bring some much needed pride to a nation riven by war.
