At least 87 killed in strike on northern Gaza, officials say, as UN warns ‘nowhere is safe’

0
Sunday 20 -Octo-2024 {HMC} Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry has said at least 87 people were killed and more than 40 injured in Saturday’s Israeli air strike on the city of Beit Lahiya in the north of the Palestinian enclave. The ministry said a number of people were still under the rubble after a residential area was hit.

Israel said it was checking reports of casualties but added that earlier – lower – figures published by Hamas were “exaggerated”. In recent weeks, the Israel military has been carrying out intense bombardment of northern Gaza, saying it wanted to prevent Hamas fighters from regrouping there.

A senior UN official warned that the “nightmare in Gaza is intensifying” and the war “must stop now”.

The UN’s peace process co-ordinator, Tor Wennesland, said that “nowhere is safe in Gaza”.

In a statement, Tor Wennesland said he condemned the continuing attacks on civilians.

“This war must end, the hostages held by Hamas must be freed, the displacement of Palestinians must cease, and civilians must be protected wherever they are. Humanitarian aid must be delivered unimpeded,” he said.

In a statement on Sunday, Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry revised its death toll from 73 to 87 after the Israeli strike on Beit Lahia.

The earlier casualty figures were provided by Hamas late on Saturday.

The ministry also said that ambulance crews were unable to reach the site of the Israeli strike.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) described the strike as a “precision” attack on a “Hamas terror target”. It told the BBC it was “doing everything possible to avoid causing harm to civilians”.

Dr Eid Sabbah, Kamal Adwan Hospital’s director of nursing, said the Israeli strike in Beit Lahia had completely destroyed several buildings, with “more than four, five residential blocks… razed to the ground”.

The strikes targeted an entire residential square, Dr Sabbah said, in between Abu Jidian roundabout and Al Qassam mosque.

Dr Sabbah added that dozens of people were killed and many were wounded “some of whom reached the hospital, some of whom remain under the rubble”.

He urged for an end to the “siege” on hospitals in northern Gaza and “for life to return to normal… before it’s too late, before our nation is exterminated”.

Several images – including the one below – have since emerged on social media showing the treatment of the injured from Beit Lahia at the Kamal Adwan Hospital.

The images have been verified by the BBC as being from the hospital.

Israel began a renewed military offensive in northern Gaza in early October, saying it is trying to prevent Hamas from regrouping in the area.

In particular, Israeli forces have surrounded and bombarded the densely-populated Jabalia area, which includes an urban refugee camp – with at least 33 people reported killed in a strike late on Friday.

Humanitarian groups have warned that virtually no aid has entered the area in the past few weeks. Israel’s own statistics show that aid deliveries to Gaza as a whole have collapsed when compared with the same period in September.

On Saturday, the UN’s top humanitarian official, Joyce Msuya, said that Palestinians in northern Gaza are enduring “unspeakable horrors” and called for these “atrocities” to stop.

Israel has repeatedly denied it is preventing humanitarian aid from entering Gaza – but on Tuesday the US told it to boost access within 30 days or risk having some American military assistance cut off.

At least 42,603 people have been killed and 99,795 injured in Gaza since the war began last October, the Hamas-run authorities say.

The war began after Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023, leaving around 1,200 people dead and 251 taken to Gaza as hostages. Israel vowed to destroy Hamas in response, launching a ground offensive in the enclave.

Elsewhere, Israel continued its air strikes against the Lebanese group Hezbollah in the southern suburbs of Beirut on Sunday.

In a statement, the IDF said: “Earlier this morning, the IAF [Israel’s air force] conducted an intelligence-based strike on a command centre of Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters and an underground weapons workshop in Beirut”.

It added that several steps were taken to “reduce the possibility of civilian casualties”, including “issuing advance warnings to residents”.

The IDF also reported that about 160 rockets were fired from Lebanon into northern Israel.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese army said three of it soldiers were killed after a military vehicle was hit by an Israeli air strike in Nabatieh, southern Lebanon.

Israel has not yet commented.

Lebanon’s army has historically stayed out of cross-border clashes between Israel and Hezbollah – but a number of its troops have been killed in Israeli attacks since fighting escalated last month.

Hezbollah – a powerful militant group in Lebanon – says it has been firing on Israeli positions in solidarity with Hamas in Gaza.

Both Hezbollah and Hamas are backed by Iran.

Mozambique opposition lawyer shot dead

0

Sunday 20 -Octo-2024 {HMC} The lawyer for a prominent Mozambique opposition figure has been shot dead in the capital, Maputo, along with an official from the same party.

Elvino Dias was the attorney for Venâncio Mondlane, who ran for president of Mozambique representing political party Podemos in an election 10 days ago.

Dias died with fellow Podemos official Paulo Guambe when gunmen attacked their car.

“They were brutally assassinated [in a] cold-blooded murder,” said local rights group the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD).

“The indications [are] that around 10 to 15 bullets were shot, and they died instantly,” said the group’s director, Adriano Nuvunga.

Another organisation, the Mais Integridade election watchdog, said the killings were designed to intimidate anyone demanding transparency in the polls.

One of the victims, Dias, died instantly, but witnesses say the other, Guambe, succumbed to his injuries hours later, and allege that police blocked his evacuation by an ambulance that had arrived at the scene to assist them.

Witnesses also allege that the police engaged in censorship and intimidation, preventing them from recording the violent scene, confiscating and damaging several phones.

The police have denied any wrongdoing, and say they will take all necessary measures to prevent any acts of vandalism, violence, or public disorder in coming days.

“Naturally, we condemn the heinous crime and assure that we are taking all measures to clarify the case,” police spokesman Lionel Muchina said on Saturday.

Tributes have been paid to Dias, described by the Carta de Moçambique news site as a “shrewd lawyer, intrepid, with the tough fibre of a fighter”.

“Elvino was a good, peaceful man,” said Zenaido Machado, of Human Rights Watch.

“Last year, during local elections, he led several elections court cases against the election commission, and he won. This year, he was preparing to do it again.”

Election votes are still being counted in Mozambique. Mondlane says he has won, and disputes claims by the establishment Frelimo party that they are in the lead. He has called for a nationwide strike on Monday.

The European Union, whose observer mission is in Mozambique monitoring the electoral process, called the killings an outrageous crime and urged the government to conduct an independent investigation.

The European bloc said these events followed “worrying reports about violent dispersion of supporters in the aftermath of last week’s election”.

Western observers have cast doubt on the credibility of the election.

Vote-buying, inflated voter rolls in Frelimo strongholds, and voter intimidation have been reported by the US-based International Republican Institute, which sent a multinational election observer mission to Mozambique.

Mozambique has only ever been governed by one party – Frelimo – which has ruled the southern African nation for half a century since independence from Portugal.

The country is guaranteed a new president because President Filipe Nyusi is stepping down after serving the two-term limit.

His successor, the leader of Frelimo, is 47-year-old Daniel Chapo.

His rivals in this election are Mondlane of Podemos, Ossufo Momade, the former rebel commander-turned-leader of the main opposition party Renamo, and Lutero Simango from the Mozambique Democratic Movement.

A civil war between the Frelimo government, with support from Cuba and the USSR, and the anti-communist Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) rebels took place from 1977 to 1992.

The conflict resulted in more than a million people dying in the fighting and in subsequent famines.

Renamo remains Mozambique’s largest opposition party, and was the springboard for Mondlane’s political career before he defected to the newly formed Podemos earlier this year.

Mozambique is rich in natural resources including rubies and gas, but is also struggling with an Islamist insurgency in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, where soldiers from dozens of countries have been deployed to help.

Somalia military strikes major blow to al-Shabab, kills 30 militants

0

Sunday 20 -Octo-2024 {HMC} Somalia’s Information Ministry said Saturday the country’s military is targeting al-Shabab militants in the Galmudug region of central Somalia and is making progress in eroding the group’s operational effectiveness.

In a coordinated military operation, the Somali National Army, or SNA, supported by Galmudug State forces and pro-government local clan militias, killed 30 al-Shabab militants and injured dozens more, according to a government statement released Saturday.

“The Somali National Army killed 30 al-Shabab militants and injured 40 others after conducting an operation at the Qeycad location in the southern Mudug region for the past 48 hours,” the statement reads.

Somali authorities say the operation was conducted after the army received intelligence regarding al-Shabab militants’ maneuvers in the region.

The government says three of its soldiers were injured during the operation.

Witnesses in Qeycad, near Ba’adweyn town in the Mudug region, said an intense gunbattle between the two sides lasted several hours, inflicting substantial damage on the militants.

“The fight lasted for hours, and the terrorists were heavily damaged, and the Somali National Army took over the area, and the group’s strongholds in the area were also destroyed during the operation,” the government statement said.

During the engagement, several al-Shabab commanders surrendered to the SNA. Among those were two significant militant leaders, “Mohamed Bashir Muse and Madey Fodey,” according to the government report.

This military action follows an incident two days prior when a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vest outside a crowded restaurant in Mogadishu, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people.

The operation also occurred concurrently with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s official visit to Kampala, Uganda, where he aimed to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance regional security cooperation with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

“The president will discuss with his counterpart, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations between Somalia and Uganda, fostering enhanced regional security and stability cooperation,” a brief Somali National News Agency announcement stated.

As Somalia navigates ongoing diplomatic disagreements with Ethiopia — particularly regarding a maritime agreement signed with Somaliland, a breakaway region — its government has sought closer ties with Egypt and Eritrea, both of which have historical disputes with Ethiopia.

Earlier this month, leaders from Egypt, Somalia, and Eritrea convened in Asmara, reinforcing what analysts describe as an emerging “axis against Ethiopia.”

Dukumintiyo Sir Ah Oo Lagu Sheegay Weerar Ay Israa’iil Ku Qaadi Doonto Iran oo La helay.

Axad 20 -Octo-2024 {HMC} Barta Telegram-ka ee  la yiraahdo “Middle East Spectator,” oo isku tilmaanta iney tahay urur warbaahineed oo iskii u madax-bannaan, ayaa shaaciysay dukumiintiyo uu ku sheegay inay yihiin xog sir ah oo ka timid sirdoonka Mareykanka, kuwaas oo faahfaahin ka bixinaya qorshe ay Israa’iil ugu diyaarsan tahay weerar ka dhan ah Jamhuuriyadda Islaamiga ah ee Iran.

Bayaan uu soo saaray kanaalka “Middle East Spectator” ayaa lagu sheegay in dukumiintiyadan ay heleen iyaga oo aan si rasmi ah loo xaqiijin, iyagoo intaas ku daray in qof aan is shaacin oo adeegsanaya madasha Telegram uu u gudbiyay xogtan.

“Waxaan helnay labo dukumiinti oo sirdoonka Mareykanka ah kuwaas oo ku saabsan diyaargarowga ay Israa’iil ugu jirto weerar ka dhan ah Iran,” ayay sheegeen.

Afhayeen u hadlay Wasaaradda Difaaca ee Mareykanka, oo la hadlay warbaahinta Business Insider, ayaa sheegay in wasaaraddu ay “baaritaan ku wado warbixintan.”

Gobolka Bariga Dhexe ayaa si weyn ugu diyaargaroobaya weerar laga filayo in Israa’iil ay ku qaado Iran.

Masuuliyiinta Israa’iil ayaa hore u sheegay inay qorsheynayaan inay ka aargoostaan weerarkii gantaalka ee Iran ku qaadday Israa’iil 1-dii bishii Oktoobar.

Dowladda Mareykanka ayaa bishan ku dhawaaqday inay ciidamo u diri doonto Israa’iil, iyadoo raacineysa nidaamka difaaca THAAD si ay uga jawaabaan weerarkii Iran.

Weerarka gantaalka ee Iran ayaa ahaa mid aargoosi ah oo la xiriiray dilkii Israa’iil ay bishii Sebtembar u geysatay Xasan Nasrallah, hoggaamiyaha kooxda Xisbullaah ee Iran taageerto.

Sean McFate, oo ah khabiir dhinaca amniga iyo siyaasadda arrimaha dibadda oo ka tirsan Jaamacadda Syracuse, ayaa warbaahinta Business Insider u sheegay in weerar ay Israa’iil ku qaaddo Iran aysan wax la yaab leh ahayn, isagoo tilmaamay in dood adag ay ka socoto dowladda Raysalwasaare Benjamin Netanyahu oo ku saabsan bartilmaameedyada weerarka.

McFate ayaa sidoo kale carabka ku adkeeyay in xogtan sirta ah ee la dusiyay ay muujineyso in xiriirka Biden iyo Netanyahu uu yahay mid kacsan, gaar ahaan iyadoo ay soo dhowdahay doorashada.
