Khamiis 17-10-2024 {HMC} A special court in Bangladesh issued arrest warrants Thursday for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 45 others, including her close aides, on charges of crimes against humanity during a student-led uprising in July and August that forced her to flee the country, a prosecutor said.
Prosecutor B.M. Sultan Mahmud said the Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, the country’s interim leader, issued the arrest warrants in response to two petitions submitted by the prosecution.
He said the head of the tribunal, Golam Mortuza Majumdar, issued the orders in the presence of other judges.
“The tribunal first accepted our petition that involved Sheikh Hasina alone. Then we moved our second petition against 45 people that involved her close aides and others for the crimes against humanity. It was also accepted by the tribunal,” he said by phone.
Hasina fled the country to India on August 5 after weeks of violent protests over government job quotas in which hundreds of people died. Prosecutors said in the petitions that Hasina, her close aides and security agencies were responsible for killing the protesters and others.
It is not clear if India will respond to any request from Bangladesh for Hasina’s extradition under a mutual treaty. The tribunal’s chief prosecutor, Muhammad Tajul Islam, earlier said they would seek help from Interpol, if necessary, to get Hasina back.
The Yunus-led interim government has promised to try Hasina and others in her administration for alleged crimes involving the uprising against her and has invited the United Nations to help investigate the killings. Hasina also called for investigation as she questioned the killings, saying many deaths may have involved others beyond security agencies.

Khamiis 17-10-2024 {HMC} Somalia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, announced that the Ethiopian Embassy, located inside the Somali Presidential Palace since 2007, will remain there for the time being, despite growing concerns from the Somali government.
Ethiopia established its embassy in Villa Somalia following its military intervention in Mogadishu in December 2006 to support Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) against insurgent groups like the Islamic Courts Union (ICU).
While the Somali government is dissatisfied with the embassy’s presence in the complex, Fiqi emphasized that moving the embassy now could cause diplomatic repercussions, particularly for Somalia’s embassy in Ethiopia, which is also in a highly important area.
“The Ethiopian Embassy was placed in the Presidential Palace with the approval of Somalia’s leadership at the time, following Ethiopia’s military intervention in 2007. Their relocation now depends on the stabilization of Somalia, and once conditions allow, all foreign embassies will be directed to move to areas designated by the government,” Fiqi said.
Fiqi also revealed that the Somali government is considering “drastic measures” if Ethiopia does not end its MoU agreement with the breakaway region of Somaliland, which has been perceived as a challenge to Somalia’s sovereignty. One potential measure is the withdrawal of Ethiopian forces from Somalia by January 1st.

Khamiis 17-10-2024 {HMC} A 21-year-old Maryland man has been arrested and charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS-Somalia, following a months-long undercover investigation, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland announced. The suspect, Michael Sam Teekaye Jr., from Hanover, Maryland, was preparing to board a flight to Somalia via Turkey and Ethiopia, intending to join the terrorist group.
According to federal prosecutors and an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court, Teekaye had been in contact with a Somali ISIS fighter since early 2023. His communications revealed a man set on joining the extremist group to fight in Africa. His plan was clear: he would travel first to Turkey, then enter Ethiopia before crossing into Somalia, where he would link up with ISIS militants. Teekaye also had a contingency plan to carry out an attack on U.S. soil, targeting supporters of Israel if he could not join the terrorist group abroad. The undercover FBI officer he communicated with posed as an ally, gaining his trust. Teekaye expressed to an undercover FBI officer his desire to join ISIS in Somalia.
Investigators say over the following months, he took concrete steps to make this plan a reality. By May and June 2024, he was buying ammunition and practicing at a shooting range in Severn, Maryland, preparing for what he called “training.”
In July 2024, Teekaye attempted to buy a Kalashnikov K-9 9mm rifle, but the sale was blocked because he was on probation for a previous criminal offence. Undeterred, he pressed on with his plan to leave the U.S. and fight alongside ISIS.
By October, Teekaye had obtained an Ethiopian e-visa and had flight tickets from a Somali ISIS fighter. He would fly from Baltimore to Istanbul, then proceed to Ethiopia before crossing into Somalia. Just days before his flight, he sent the undercover FBI officer a photo of himself wearing a black mask and holding a machete, captioning it: “Abdullah the islamophobe slayer.”

Thursday 17, Oct 2024 {HMC} Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi agreed to deepen trade and investment cooperation and called for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon in talks in Cairo on Tuesday.
Egypt’s presidency said the leaders signed an agreement to encourage and protect mutual investments between the countries, and witnessed the signing of an accord to form a supreme coordination council between Riyadh and Cairo to deepen cooperation.
The visit is taking place amid speculation about potential Saudi investments in Egypt, which has received a major influx of external financing this year including a record $35 billion deal with UAE sovereign fund ADQ.
The crown prince, known as MbS, made his last official visit to Egypt in 2022. Saudi Arabia, which has provided financial support to Sisi’s Egypt in the past, later indicated it was shifting towards investing rather than providing direct aid to allies.
Tuesday’s presidency statement said the two leaders reviewed efforts to develop economic partnership between Cairo and Riyadh particularly in investment, trade and economic integration in the energy, transport and tourism sectors.
The leaders also discussed regional developments, particularly the situations in Gaza and Lebanon, the presidency said, adding that “they demanded to start taking steps to reach calm that include a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon”.
Egypt’s sovereign dollar bonds rallied by early afternoon on Tuesday, with longer-dated maturities gaining the most. The 2059 maturity added 1.73 cents by 1128 GMT to bid at 77.80 cents on the dollar.
Egypt’s prime minister said last month that Saudi Arabia was planning to invest $5 billion in Egypt, independently from funds the Gulf state has deposited in the Egyptian central bank.
Possible targets of investment include two sites for tourism developments on Egypt’s Red Sea coast and in the south of its Sinai peninsula, both of which are opposite Saudi Arabia.
Egypt has been seeking large investments as it tackles a long-running economic crisis that led to record inflation, a rising debt burden and sharp currency devaluations over the past two years.

Khamiis 17-10-2024 {HMC} Ukraine’s military said Thursday it shot down 22 of 56 drones that Russian forces used in attacks overnight targeting areas in central and western Ukraine.
The intercepts took place over the Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Poltava, Ternopil, Sumy and Zhytomyr regions, Ukraine’s air force said.
Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, said on Telegram the attack damaged an apartment building.
In Mykolaiv, Governor Vitalii Kim said Russia targeted energy infrastructure.
Officials in Sumy also said the Russia attack damaged an apartment building and several emergency vehicles.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said Thursday it destroyed six Ukrainian drones over the Oryol region, four drones over Kursk and three drones over Bryansk. Officials in those regions did not report any damage or casualties.
U.S. President Joe Biden talked with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Wednesday about defense aid for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
Biden also announced a $425 million security assistance package for Ukraine that includes additional air defense capabilities, air-to-ground munitions, armored vehicles and munitions critical to addressing its pressing military needs.
The United States is set to supply Ukraine with more equipment in the coming months, including hundreds of air defense interceptors, dozens of tactical air defense systems, additional artillery systems, hundreds of armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles.
