The meeting highlighted the bilateral ties formally established in 2022 and underscored the importance of revitalizing the relationship to build a more active and mutually beneficial partnership.

Saturday 22, Nov 2025 {HMC} The members of both Houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia convened today for the sixth joint sitting of the 7th session at the Parliament Headquarters in Mogadishu. The meeting was chaired by the Speaker of the House of the People, H.E. Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madoobe), accompanied by the deputy speakers of both Houses.

The main agenda of the session was the third reading and vote on the Final Accounts of the 2024 national budget, submitted earlier by the Ministry of Finance.

At the outset, the Chair of the Budget, Finance, Planning, International Cooperation and Oversight Committee of the House of the People, MP Abdi Ibrahim Warsame (Qowdhan), presented to the joint Houses the committee’s report on the third reading of the 2024 Final Accounts, which had been jointly reviewed over the past weeks by the budget committees of both Houses.

Following deliberations, lawmakers from both Chambers voted on the Final Accounts of the 2024 fiscal year. A total of 167 Members of Parliament voted in favour, two voted against, while one MP abstained, thereby approving the Final Accounts.

Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madoobe), who closed the session, underscored that critical national tasks lie ahead in the 7th session. He reaffirmed that both Houses of Parliament will prioritise the review and completion of the Provisional Constitution of the Federal Republic of Somalia in the coming weeks.

Reflecting on the vital role of Somali teachers, the President highlighted their historic contribution to advancing the nation’s education sector and nurturing skilled generations capable of shaping Somalia’s future. He directed the Ministry to finalize the recruitment of the remaining teachers needed to complete the government’s 10,000-teacher initiative.

“In this country, no one is more valuable than the Somali teacher and soldier. It is our duty to honour and support teachers, who are the backbone of societal development. The government has already hired 6,000 teachers, now fully deployed across educational institutions. I urge the Ministry to swiftly finalize the remaining recruitment and ensure proper training,” President Hassan said.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening teacher training, capacity-building, and motivation to guarantee that current and future generations receive quality education aligned with international standards. He reminded Somali youth that they are the leaders of both today and tomorrow.

The event was attended by Minister of Education Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir, senior government officials, education agencies, teachers, and students from various schools across the capital, who presented special performances dedicated to honouring Somali educators.

Saturday 22, Nov 2025 {HMC} South African bandits killed a Somali businessman, identified as Mahmoud Abdi Osman, in Philippi, Cape Town, on Friday night.

According to local sources, the victim was shot dead inside his shop by armed assailants. Philippi is considered one of the most dangerous areas for Somali traders, who are frequently targeted in violent attacks.

South African police arrived at the crime scene hours later and said an investigation is underway. No arrests have yet been made in connection with the killing.
Attacks on Somali business owners in South Africa have sharply increased in recent weeks.

Despite the rising violence, the Somali government has not issued any statement regarding the repeated killings and robberies affecting its citizens in the country.

Saturday 22, Nov 2025 {HMC}President Donald Trump said Friday night that he’s “immediately” terminating temporary legal protections for Somali migrants living in Minnesota, further targeting a program seeking to limit deportations that his administration has already repeatedly sought to weaken.

Minnesota has the nation’s largest Somali community. Many fled the long civil war in their east African country and were drawn to the state’s welcoming social programs.

But how many migrants would be affected by Trump’s announcement that he wants to end temporary protective status could be very small. A report produced for Congress in August put the number of Somalis covered by the program at just 705 nationwide.

Congress created the program granting Temporary Protective Status in 1990. It was meant to prevent deportations of people to countries suffering from natural disasters, civil strife or other dangerous conditions.

The designation can be granted by the Homeland Security secretary and is granted in 18-month increments.

The president announced his decision on his social media site, suggesting that Minnesota was “a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity.”

“Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that great State, and BILLIONS of Dollars are missing. Send them back to where they came from,” Trump wrote. “It’s OVER!”

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said Trump’s decision “will tear families apart.” Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said in a statement late Friday, ”This is not just a bureaucratic change; it is a political attack on the Somali and Muslim community driven by Islamophobic and hateful rhetoric.”

Trump promised while campaigning to win back the White House last year that his administration would deport millions of people. As part of a broader push to adopt hardline immigration policies, the Trump administration has moved to withdraw various protections that had allowed immigrants to remain in the United States and work legally.

That included ending TPS for 600,000 Venezuelans and 500,000 Haitians who were granted protection under President Joe Biden. The Trump administration has also sought to limit protections previously extended to migrants from Cuba and Syria, among other countries.
