Somali forces fighting al Shabaab attack on high-security prison.

0

Saturday 4,Oct 2025 {HMC} Somali government forces were fighting on Saturday to repel al Shabaab militants who stormed a high-security underground prison in the capital Mogadishu, a witness and the government said.

Godka Jilaow, near the Villa Somalia presidential palace compound, houses several fighters from the al Shabaab group, which has waged an insurgency in Somalia since 2007 and made significant advances in the countryside this year.

“We heard a huge blast at the cell gate and soon an exchange of gunfire started,” a paramilitary soldier in the area who gave his name as Ahmed told Reuters. “More forces were deployed to eliminate the fighters. (The) operation (is) still ongoing.”
AL SHABAAB CLAIMS RESPONSIBILITY

Residents near the area also confirmed the blast and exchange of gunfire.

Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack.

“We targeted the underground cell guarded by security forces. First it was started with a suicide car bomb and immediately infantry fighters went into the cell compound and they are fighting inside,” the group said in a statement, adding there were casualties and injuries among soldiers.

In a statement on state television’s Facebook account, the government said al Shabaab fighters used a car disguised as a vehicle from the security forces to blast their way in.

“Some of the fighters were shot dead. What’s going on is the last operation to eliminate the fighters who attacked the place,” the statement said.

UK police given more time to question 4 suspects over deadly Manchester synagogue attack.

0

Saturday 4,Oct 2025 {HMC} U.K. police were given extra time Saturday to question four people arrested on suspicion of terror offenses after an attack on a synagogue in northwest England that left two people dead and Britain’s Jewish community shocked and grieving.

Two other people who had been arrested were released without charge.

Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, was shot dead by police on Thursday outside the Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue in Manchester after he rammed a car into pedestrians, attacked them with a knife and tried to force his way into the building.

Congregation members Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, died in the attack on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year. Police say Daulby was accidentally shot by an armed officer as he and other congregants barricaded the synagogue to block Al-Shamie from entering. Three other men are hospitalized with serious injuries.

Detectives say Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian origin who lived in Manchester, may have been influenced by “extreme Islamist ideology.” He wore what appeared to be an explosives belt, which was found to be fake.

Police said that Al-Shamie was on bail over an alleged rape at the time of the attack, but hadn’t been charged.

Three men and three women were arrested in the greater Manchester area on suspicion of the “commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism,” as police work to determine whether the attacker acted alone. A court on Saturday granted police five more days to hold four of the suspects: men ages 30 and 32, and women ages 46 and 61. An 18-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man were released with no further action, police said.

Police haven’t identified those arrested or disclosed their links to Al-Shamie.

Antisemitic incidents on the rise
The attack has devastated Britain’s Jewish community and intensified debate about the line between criticism of Israel and antisemitism.

Recorded antisemitic incidents in the U.K. have risen sharply since Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel and Israel’s ensuing campaign against Hamas in Gaza, according to Community Security Trust, a charity that provides advice and protection for British Jews.

Some politicians and religious leaders claimed pro-Palestinian demonstrations, which have been held regularly since the war in Gaza began, had played a role in spreading hatred of Jews. The protests have been overwhelmingly peaceful, but some say chants such as “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” incite anti-Jewish hatred.

Some also say that the U.K.’s recognition of a Palestinian state last month has emboldened antisemitism — a claim that the government rejects. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy was interrupted by boos and shouts of “Shame on you” on Friday as he addressed a vigil for victims of the attack in Manchester.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his supporters have frequently accused critics of Israel or its conduct of the war of antisemitism. Critics see it as an attempt to stifle even legitimate criticism.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, the head of Orthodox Judaism in Britain, said that the attack was the result of “an unrelenting wave of Jew hatred” on the streets and online.

Pro-Palestinian rallies in Manchester and London

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators were held in Manchester and London on Saturday despite objections from police and politicians. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that organizers should “recognize and respect the grief of British Jews this week” and postpone the protests.

About 100 people gathered in a central Manchester square in heavy rain, waving Palestinian flags and demanding an end to the war in Gaza.

In London, organizers said that about 1,000 people demonstrated against the banning of Palestine Action, a direct-action group that has vandalized British military planes and targeted sites with links to the Israeli military. It has been labeled a terrorist organization by the government, making support for the group illegal. Critics say that tramples on free speech and the right to protest.

Police officers carried away a number of people who sat silently in Trafalgar Square holding signs saying “I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action.” Police said they made at least 493 arrests.

More than 2,000 people have now been arrested at protests since Palestine Action was proscribed in July, and more than 130 charged with terrorism offenses.

Campaigner Jonathon Porritt said that protesters would “demonstrate huge respect and real grief for those affected by the absolute atrocity at Heaton Park.

“But I don’t think that means that we should be asked to give up on our right to stand up for those who are being devastated by an ongoing, real-time genocide in Gaza,” he told the BBC.

Somali President opens Somalia–U.S. Presidential Trade summit in Mogadishu

Sunday 5 October , 2025{HMC} Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud officially opened the Somalia–U.S. Presidential Trade Summit in Mogadishu on Saturday, aimed at strengthening economic cooperation and attracting foreign investment across key sectors in Somalia.

Speaking at the event, President Mohamud described the summit as an important milestone marking Somalia’s transition from aid dependency to partnership and innovation, positioning the country as “a new frontier for American and global investment, boosting local creativity and private sector growth.”

“We invite investors to come to Somalia, explore opportunities, and invest in a country rich in minerals and other vital resources,” President Mohamud added.

The president reaffirmed his government’s commitment to enhancing trade relations with friendly nations, particularly the United States, to drive sustainable development and create new job opportunities for Somali youth.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, said Somalia is now ready to attract global investments, highlighting promising opportunities in energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and fisheries.

Somalia’s Ambassador to the United States, Dahir Hassan Abdi, noted that fifteen American-owned companies are participating in the summit, reflecting growing international confidence in Somalia’s business environment.

Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Abdirahman Batan Warsame, underscored Somalia’s significant potential in the energy sector — particularly in electricity, renewable energy, and water — and encouraged U.S. investors to explore these opportunities and contribute to the country’s development.

The summit comes as Somalia redoubles its efforts to build stronger economic partnerships with the United States, promoting shared growth, innovation, and long-term prosperity.

President Hassan Sheikh visits Kismayo to ease rift with Jubbaland

Sunday 5 October , 2025{HMC}   Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived Sunday in Kismayo, the seat of Jubbaland State, for high-level talks, hoping to restore cooperation and trust between the federal government and the regional administration after years of political rift and intermittent conflict.

The visit marks the president’s first to Kismayo since relations soured and an attempt to reset ties with Jubbaland leader Ahmed Mohamed Islam “Madobe.” Officials say the two leaders will discuss ways to rebuild collaboration, reduce inflammatory rhetoric, and lay the groundwork for renewed dialogue.

Relations between Mogadishu and Kismayo have been fraught since 2019, when disputes over electoral management, local autonomy, and security control escalated into political standoffs and, at times, armed clashes.

Tensions between Villa Somalia and Kismayo deepened in late 2024, when Mogadishu declared Jubbaland’s regional elections invalid. The decision set off a dramatic standoff and descended into legal brinkmanship, as rival courts in the two capitals issued arrest warrants in a rare show of open defiance.

The conflict undermined coordination on national priorities and delayed development efforts across southern Somalia.

Federal government officials said the talks are expected to produce a framework for cooperation on security, federalism, and regional development.

Security in Kismayo was heightened Sunday as troops patrolled major roads and checkpoints ahead of the president’s arrival. Two aircraft carrying additional federal forces were dispatched Saturday to secure key routes and government facilities.
The trip is viewed by many as a critical test of the president’s state-reconciliation agenda, which seeks to resolve lingering disputes with federal member states and strengthen coordination in the fight against Al-Shabaab. A breakthrough in Kismayo could set a precedent for improved relations across Somalia’s federal system, where mistrust has long undermined national cohesion.
Hiiraan Online will continue to provide updates as discussions in Kismayo progress.
