Ship carrying rice and sugar for Somali traders burns off Gujarat coast

Monday September 22, 2025 [HMC] A cargo vessel carrying food supplies for Somali traders in Puntland caught fire Monday while anchored off Porbandar in India’s Gujarat state, Indian officials and port authorities said.
The vessel, identified as Haridharshan, had departed from Jamnagar and was bound for Bosaso, the commercial hub of Somalia’s Bari region. It was loaded with about 950 tons of rice and 78 tons of sugar owned by Somali businessmen.

All 14 crew members were safely evacuated as the fire spread. Fire crews received the alert at 6:40 a.m. local time and arrived within ten minutes, deploying three engines to fight the blaze. Additional coast guard units assisted in the operation.

Authorities said the vessel was towed roughly one kilometre into open waters to prevent damage to the jetty and nearby ships. The fire, which burned in the cargo hold, caused extensive damage to the rice cargo and posed a risk of spreading to diesel tanks on board. No casualties were reported.
The ship was operated by HRM & Sons, based in Jamnagar. A preliminary assessment suggests the blaze may have been caused by a short circuit, though the exact cause is still under investigation.
Bosaso serves as one of Somalia’s busiest ports, handling much of the rice, sugar and other staples that supply markets across Puntland and the wider Horn of Africa.

World leaders recognize Palestinian state as Israel vows retaliation

Monday September 22, 2025 [HMC]France and Saudi Arabia convened world leaders in New York on Monday for a summit where several nations formally recognized a Palestinian state, a symbolic move that has sharpened Israel’s isolation and drawn a strong rebuke from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal announced recognition on Sunday, and French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to follow at the United Nations General Assembly. Supporters said the coordinated step was meant to revive the two-state solution, long seen internationally as the only path to end the conflict.

Israel and the United States boycotted the meeting, dismissing it as a political stunt. Netanyahu declared, “There will be no Palestinian state,” and vowed to respond after consultations in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump. Far-right members of his coalition pressed for annexation of parts of the occupied West Bank, a move that could rupture ties with Arab states that normalized relations under the 2020 Abraham Accords.

Israel’s U.N. ambassador described the summit as a “circus,” while U.S. officials argued unilateral recognition rewarded Hamas and undermined cease-fire talks.
France countered that the declaration was a symbolic but urgent step to keep the two-state option viable.
The diplomatic push comes as Israeli forces intensify operations in Gaza City. Palestinian health authorities say more than 65,000 people have been killed since the war began in 2023. Israel says the campaign will continue until Hamas is dismantled.
France and Saudi Arabia presented a roadmap alongside the summit calling for an end to the war, the release of hostages, an Israeli withdrawal, and the creation of a demilitarized Palestinian state under a reformed Palestinian Authority with international support. The proposal sidesteps core disputes, including final borders, settlements, the right of return for refugees, and the status of Jerusalem.
Germany and Italy have withheld recognition, saying it should come only after direct negotiations. The United Arab Emirates, which normalized ties with Israel five years ago, warned that annexation of West Bank land would cross a “red line.”
For Palestinians under bombardment, the announcements brought little immediate relief. “Even if these countries recognize Palestine, it won’t force Israel to grant us our rights,” said displaced Gaza resident Nabeel Jaber. In Tel Aviv, Israelis voiced skepticism, with one student saying Palestinians had rejected past peace offers.

Kenya urges EU to prioritise war against AS

Monday September 22, 2025 [HMC] Kenya has urged Cyprus to prioritize the fight against AS when it assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in early 2026.

Speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi warned that waning international attention on Somalia could undermine regional security gains.

“There is growing international fatigue because of other conflicts and a shift in focus. The international community’s support has depreciated significantly, and countries like Kenya have been left to carry the heavy load in this fight,” Mudavadi said.

Kenya currently deploys about 3,000 troops in Somalia under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Mudavadi cautioned that a Kenyan withdrawal could create a dangerous security vacuum few international players are prepared to fill.

The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) is facing a severe funding crisis, with an estimated annual budget of $166.5 million but only $16.7 million pledged so far. UN Resolution 2719, intended to establish a pathway for UN budget support, has yet to be finalized, leaving a significant financial gap.

Cyprus will take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026, its second time since 2012.
