Somali students arrive in Baku to study under Azerbaijan scholarships

Tuesday September 16, 2025 {HMC}Twenty-eight Somali students have received government scholarships to study in Azerbaijan, the Somali Embassy in Ankara announced Tuesday.
Nineteen students have already arrived in the capital, Baku, with nine more expected in the coming days. They will study petroleum science, engineering, medicine and computer science, fields Somali officials say are critical to the country’s reconstruction and economic growth.
The students were welcomed at Baku International Airport by embassy officials, including First Secretary Ibrahim Ali Abshir, alongside representatives from Azerbaijani universities hosting them.
Somali Ambassador to Turkey Fathudin Ali Mohamed Ospite, who is also accredited to Baku, congratulated the students and urged them to dedicate themselves to their studies. “Your success will strengthen Somalia’s future as well as your own,” he told the group during their reception at Baku International Airport, where embassy officials and university representatives welcomed them.
The scholarships expand on bilateral agreements signed in Baku in February 2025, when Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev pledged deeper cooperation in educationenergy, public service delivery and defence. At that meeting, Aliyev confirmed that Somali students were already studying in Azerbaijan and said the number of places would grow.
In July, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov announced that 20 scholarships would be reserved for Somali students in 2025, underscoring the importance both governments place on academic exchanges. Somali and Azerbaijani foreign ministers also reiterated education as a priority during talks at an OIC ministerial meeting in Istanbul in June, where they agreed to form a Joint Intergovernmental Commission.
The scholarships are part of Azerbaijan’s state-funded international integration program, which provides higher education opportunities for students from developing countries.

Turkish President Erdogan meets with counterparts on sidelines of Islamic-Arab summit

Tuesday September 16, 2025 {HMC}Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday met with several of his counterparts on the sidelines of an extraordinary Organization of Islamic Cooperation-Arab League summit in Qatar

Erdogan met separately with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on the margins of the meeting.

During his meeting with al Sudani, Erdogan said their cooperation against terrorism will continue and bilateral ties will be strengthened in various areas.

In the meeting with bin Salman, Erdogan vowed that Türkiye will continue to stand by countries targeted by Israeli aggression.

In addition, Erdogan met with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as well as with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa.

Meeting with his Somali counterpart, Erdogan urged the global community to raise its voice to ensure uninterrupted access to humanitarian aid for Palestine, stressing the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, which has been under Israel’s attacks for almost two years.

Meeting with his Syrian counterpart, the Turkish president highlighted the importance of preserving Syria’s unity and solidarity as well as the SDF fulfilling its deal with Damascus made on March 10.

Erdogan also held a meeting with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and they discussed bilateral relations as well as regional and global issues.

President Erdogan said Israel’s attack on Qatar is unacceptable and that Ankara stands alongside Qatar.

He underlined that Israel’s attack aims to undermine peace negotiations, that continuing talks under any circumstances would be beneficial, and that Türkiye will continue to support mediation efforts.

Somali Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre rules out Presidential bid, reaffirms loyalty to President Mohamud

Tuesday September 16, 2025 {HMC} Somali Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre has affirmed that he will not run for president of Somalia, making clear that he will never compete against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who appointed him.

“I will not compete with the president who appointed me. I tell everyone, and that is obvious. If he does not run for president, I will look into it,” Prime Minister Hamse said during a question-and-answer program on Monday night, marking three years since his appointment.

The Prime Minister noted that he and President Mohamud have been close friends for more than 20 years, emphasizing that their bond goes beyond politics. He said their cooperation over the past three years has been built on mutual respect and trust.

Hamse Abdi Barre stressed that he took office to serve the Somali people and to avoid any conflict that could hinder the country’s development. He added that it would be impossible for him to run against the president who gave him the opportunity to become prime minister, pledging instead to continue working alongside him.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appointed Hamse Abdi Barre, then a member of the Federal Parliament, as Prime Minister three years ago. Since then, the two leaders have maintained a strong working relationship without disagreements on political issues.

Prime Minister Barre’s remarks came as he marked the third anniversary of his appointment.

Northeastern administration condemns killing of traditional elder in airstrike

Tuesday September 16, 2025 {HMC} The Northeastern regional administration has strongly condemned the killing of Sudan Omar Abdullahi Ibrahim in a recent airstrike near the Elbuuh district of Sanaag region.

In a press release issued Tuesday, the administration said it still does not know who was officially responsible for the airstrike that killed the traditional elder.

“The killing of an elder by unidentified aircraft is harmful to the peace and stability of the Northeastern region and the Somali people in general,” the statement read.

The administration called on the Federal Government of Somalia to assume its responsibility in protecting the country’s airspace and safeguarding Somali citizens. It further urged a thorough investigation into the killing to ensure justice is served.

On September 13, 2025, elder Omar Abdullahi Ibrahim, one of the most prominent traditional leaders in the Northeastern region, was killed in an airstrike in the Jinacyo area of Elbuuh district, Sanaag region.

The Northeastern administration stressed that its land and airspace cannot be used in ways that harm the dignity of the Somali people, underscoring that its territory is inviolable.

Prominent businessman killed in Galkayo amid rising clan violence

Tuesday September 16, 2025 {HMC} A group of gunmen killed Siyad Ali Hirsi, one of the most prominent businessmen in Galkayo town, on Tuesday morning.

The killing is linked to the ongoing clan conflicts in the city. Hirsi belonged to one of the two clans that recently clashed in the Horumar neighborhood, violence that left two people dead.

A woman was also injured in Tuesday’s attack. The gunmen fled the scene, while security forces arrived shortly afterward.

Clan violence in northern Galkayo has escalated, with civilians increasingly becoming targets. Just days ago, Dr. Omar Abdi Daahir was killed during clashes in the city.

The Mudug Regional Administration and local intellectuals have so far failed to find a solution to the conflict, which many residents say has reached a deadlock.
