Coventry Becomes First Female IOC President, Defeats Coe.

Friday 21, March 2025 {HMC} Kirsty Coventry hopes her election as the first female and African president of the International Olympic Committee – beating six male candidates including Britain’s Lord Coe – sends a “powerful signal”.

The 41-year-old former swimmer, who won two Olympic gold medals, secured a majority of 49 of the 97 available votes in the first round of Thursday’s election, while World Athletics boss Coe won just eight.

Zimbabwe’s sports minister Coventry will replace Thomas Bach – who has led the IOC since 2013 – on 23 June and be the youngest president in the organisation’s 130-year history.

Her first Olympics will be the Milan-Cortina Winter Games in February 2026.

“It’s a really powerful signal. It’s a signal that we’re truly global and that we have evolved into an organisation that is truly open to diversity and we’re going to continue walking that road in the next eight years,” Coventry said.

Runner-up Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr won 28 votes while France’s David Lappartient and Japan’s Morinari Watanabe earned four votes each. Prince Feisal al Hussein of Jordan and Sweden’s Johan Eliasch both took two.

Coventry, who already sits on the IOC executive board and was said to be Bach’s preferred candidate, is the 10th person to hold the highest office in sport and will be in post for at least the next eight years.

Coventry has won seven of Zimbabwe’s eight Olympic medals – including gold in the 200m backstroke at both the 2004 and 2008 Games.

“The young girl who first started swimming in Zimbabwe all those years ago could never have dreamed of this moment,” said Coventry.

“I am particularly proud to be the first female IOC president, and also the first from Africa.

“I hope that this vote will be an inspiration to many people. Glass ceilings have been shattered today, and I am fully aware of my responsibilities as a role model.”

Coventry described her election as an “extraordinary moment” during her acceptance speech, and promised to make IOC members proud of their choice.

During her election campaign Coventry pledged to modernise, promote sustainability, embrace technology and empower athletes.

She placed particular emphasis on protecting female sport, backing a blanket ban of transgender women from competing in female Olympic sport.

Coe congratulates Coventry

While Coe was disappointed with finishing a distant third, he accepted defeat and refused to be drawn into interpreting the vote.

“We have an athlete at the helm of the organisation,” Coe said. “We talked about it together a few weeks ago and we both agreed it was really important, and I’m very pleased for her. This is a very good result for the athletes.

“I’ve congratulated her. She’s got a huge job, but she will have the confidence of the athletes, and that’s very important.

“I think what is pretty clear is that the athletes and the women members in particular supported her very strongly in the first round, and you know those things happen in elections.”

The presidential vote took place at a luxury hotel in a seaside resort about 60 miles south of the Greek town of Olympia, the birthplace of the ancient Games.

IOC members had to hand in their phones before a secret electronic ballot at about 14:30 GMT.

The campaign process restricted candidates to 15-minute presentations at a private event in January, with media barred and no scope for questions from members afterwards.

Endorsements by members were not allowed, nor was any criticism of rival candidates, meaning behind-the-scenes lobbying played an important role.

British Olympic Association CEO Andy Anson congratulated Coventry, saying: “We know her well and look forward to working together to grow the Olympic movement’s global relevance and commercial success.”

Russia hopes Coventry’s victory will lead to its return from sporting exile. Russian athletes have not competed at the Olympics under their own flag since 2016, following the state-run doping scandal and then the war in Ukraine.

“We look forward to a stronger, more independent, and more prosperous Olympic movement under a new leader, and to Russia returning to the Olympic podium,” Russian sports minister Mikhail Degtyarev, who is also head of the Russian Olympic Committee, wrote on his Telegram account.

Coventry has faced criticism in Zimbabwe in her capacity as sports minister since 2018, but defended her association with the government of controversial president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Governmental interference in football resulted in Fifa banning Zimbabwe from the international game in 2022, while last year the United States imposed sanctions on Mnangagwa and other senior officials for corruption and human rights abuses.

‘Communication will be key’

Coventry pledged to work with her fellow election candidates, saying: “What I want to focus on is bringing all the candidates together. There were so many good ideas and exchanges over the last six months.

“I’d really like to leverage off of that and then really bring everyone back together and have a reset.

“I have some ideas, but a part of my campaign was listening to the IOC members and hearing what they have to say and hearing how we want to move together.”

On the challenges posed by geopolitical issues, Coventry said: “The IOC and the Olympic movement have lasted so many generations because it brings people together and the diversity is a unifying way for us to connect with each other.

“So right now in today’s world, this is our biggest platform to showcase the good of humanity and to share our values as the Olympic movement.”

Coventry said that “communication will be key” with US President Donald Trump, with fears his immigration policies could affect athletes’ abilities to get visas before the 2028 LA Games.

“I have been dealing with, let’s say, difficult men in high positions since I was 20 years old,” she said.

‘A landmark moment for world sport’ – analysis

This is a landmark moment for the IOC and for world sport.

As the first woman to hold sport’s most powerful role, Kirsty Coventry is a trailblazer. But as a member of its executive board, she is also an IOC insider.

Coventry was seen as the preferred candidate of outgoing president Thomas Bach and her convincing victory after a low-key campaign will be seen as a reflection of his influence.

IOC members were clearly untroubled by her close association with the controversial Zimbabwe government.

Coventry will assume her new role in June at a critical time for the Olympic movement.

She will have to deal with a tense geopolitical landscape, the potential reintegration of Russia, and US President Donald Trump before the 2028 LA Games.

She will also have to tackle issues such as gender eligibility, climate change, and ensuring the Games remain relevant going forward.

Meanwhile, this is a rare setback for Lord Coe, who will be hugely disappointed to have been beaten so convincingly.

On paper he was very well qualified for the role, but antagonised the IOC hierarchy with a surprise move to introduce cash for gold medals at last year’s Paris Olympics and his tough stance with Russia.

He was seen as a reform candidate and a disruptor – and in the final reckoning that seems to have cost him the role he said he had been preparing for all his life.

Coventry’s triumph is a groundbreaking moment. But it also suggests that the IOC is resistant to the change that Coe stood for.

CS Duale launches climate initiatives to strengthen Kenya’s resilience.

0

Thursday 20, March 2025 {HMC} Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Aden Duale, has unveiled two major initiatives to bolster Kenya’s response to climate change: the National Framework for Climate Services (NFCS), and the State of the Climate Kenya (SOCK) 2024 Report.

Speaking at the launch, Duale emphasized that these efforts mark a significant step toward a more resilient and sustainable future for the country.

“With immense pride and a profound sense of responsibility, I stand before you today as we mark a very important moment in Kenya’s history towards a resilient and sustainable future,” he said.

According to Duale, NFCS will serve as the foundation of Kenya’s climate strategy and provide timely, reliable, and actionable climate data to various sectors, including government agencies, businesses, academia, and local communities.

He noted that the framework is designed to enhance Kenya’s ability to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to climate variability and extreme weather events.

“By strengthening our capacity to focus, to prepare for, and to respond to climate variability and extreme events, this framework ensures that Kenya can adapt more effectively to the uncertainties of the changing climate,” he said.

The CS expressed his confidence in the implementation of NFCS framework which is expected to improve agricultural planning, water resource management, disaster risk response, and the protection of critical infrastructure.

“Our goal is very clear,” Duale said adding, “To build a nation that is resilient, that is informed, and that is ready to face the challenges posed by climate change and variability.”

Duale emphasized that, in addition to the framework, the SOCK 2024 Report offers a thorough evaluation of the country’s climate trends, challenges, and opportunities, describing it as a result of rigorous scientific research and expert analysis.

“This report paints a detailed picture of our current realities, highlighting both the trends we must urgently address as government and as a region and the opportunities that lie ahead,” he said adding that the insights presented in this report will serve as a compass for policymakers and stakeholders across the country and our region.

Additionally, he called on all stakeholders, from county governments, private enterprises, civil society organizations, and individual citizens, to actively participate in climate action.

“We are all custodians of Kenya’s future, we must harness the power of science, innovation, and partnerships to forge solutions that are both sustainable and inclusive,” the CS said.

Further, the CS stressed that while the two new initiatives provide the necessary tools, success will ultimately depend on collaboration, responsibility, and unity.

“Our determination and responsibility will drive this change. Together, we must implement strategies that not only mitigate the effects of climate change but also ensure that our natural heritage, biodiversity, and communities thrive for generations to come,” he stated.

In a quick rejoinder, the Principal Secretary (PS) of, State Department for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, emphasized the urgent need for climate information in the agricultural sector, particularly in livestock farming, noting that climate change has severely impacted livestock productivity.

Mueke stressed that livestock farmers are affected not only by droughts but also by floods, which destroy water infrastructure leading to significant losses.

He welcomed the framework for improving coordination, allowing the sector to access vital climate data for better planning.

“Our livestock sector has been affected tremendously by events of climate change,” he said, explaining that excessive heat reduces animals’ appetite and increases the prevalence of ticks and bacteria, leading to lowered production of milk, eggs, and meat.

With accurate weather forecasts, he said, farmers can prepare for droughts and adopt climate-smart practices, including using drought-resistant fodder and pasture varieties to sustain livestock productivity.

His counterpart the Principal Secretary (PS) State Department of Forestry, Gitonga Mugambi, called on Kenyans to plant more trees to help address climate change, emphasizing that forests play a key role in regulating the climate.

“We have a 15-billion-tree target to meet as a country so that we can grow the 30 per cent cover needed to help moderate climate extremes,” he said.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has praised Kenya for its strong leadership in climate services and its commitment to advancing weather and climate information.

Speaking on behalf of Chief Executive of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu, the Chief of Mission for Africa in Kenya reiterated Kenya’s key role in the region, noting that WMO’s Eastern and Southern Africa offices are hosted in the country.

WMO commended the strong partnerships, science-driven solutions, and collaboration with various sectors as essential for building a climate-resilient Kenya.

US strikes Houthi strongholds in Yemen where leaders are hiding, Yemeni sources say.

0

Thursday 20, March  2025 {HMC} The U.S. hit targets across Yemen in airstrikes overnight, including Saada province, which Yemeni sources say is a long-time hideout for Iran-aligned Houthi leaders, and the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah.

Houthi-run Al Masirah TV reported more than 10 strikes on various locations, including the Al-Safra district of Saada. The area houses weapons storage and training sites, and is considered one of the group’s most important and heavily fortified military strongholds, according to Yemeni sources.

The strikes, launched on Saturday over the Houthis’ attacks against Red Sea shipping, are the biggest U.S. military operation in the Middle East since President Donald Trump took office in January.

The Iran-aligned Houthis have carried out over 100 attacks on shipping after Israel’s war with Hamas began in late 2023, saying they were acting in solidarity with Gaza’s Palestinians. The attacks have disrupted global commerce and set the U.S. military off on a costly campaign to intercept missiles.

Houthi leaders say they will escalate attacks in response to the U.S. campaign. Jamal Amer, the Houthi foreign minister, told Reuters from Sanaa on Monday: “Now we see that Yemen is at war with the U.S. and that means that we have a right to defend ourselves with all possible means, so escalation is likely.”

The Houthis are part of what has been called the “Axis of Resistance” – an anti-Israel and anti-Western alliance of regional militias including Hamas, Hezbollah and armed groups in Iraq, all backed by Iran.

Trump threatened to hold Iran accountable for any future Houthi attacks, warning of severe consequences.

Two senior Iranian officials told Reuters that Iran had delivered a verbal message to the Houthi envoy in Tehran asking the group to cool tensions.

LEADERSHIP IN HIDING

The Houthis, who have taken control of most of Yemen over the past decade, said last week they would resume attacks on Israeli ships after weeks of relative calm in the Red Sea following a Gaza ceasefire in January.

Under the leadership of Abdul Malik al-Houthi, the force has grown to number tens of thousands and has built a sophisticated arsenal of drones and ballistic missiles.

Since airstrikes started under former U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration, the group has moved its weapons away from known military sites, Yemeni sources said.

They established new trenches and bunkers to avoid being targeted by the U.S., but the latest U.S. campaign has targeted the newly established sites and forced the Houthi leadership into hiding, the sources told Reuters.

The leaders have switched off or discarded their mobile phones to avoid detection, cutting off communications.

The only top leader to appear publicly recently was Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, head of the militia’s Supreme Revolutionary Committee, who was seen – in a video circulated on social media – disguised as a civilian on a bus two days ago, before delivering a speech in Sanaa’s Sabeen Square.

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the resumption of airstrikes on Gaza and the Houthis declared they would expand their targets in Israel in the coming hours and days unless the “aggression” against Gaza stops.

The group’s military spokesman has said without providing evidence that it had launched attacks against the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea.

A U.S. official said on Sunday U.S. warplanes shot down 11 Houthi drones none of which came close to the Truman. U.S. forces also tracked a missile that splashed down off the coast of Yemen and was not deemed a threat, the official said.
