Ethiopia, Somalia reinvigorates relation, says foreign affairs spokesperson

Saturday 1,March 2025 {HMC} Ethiopia and Somalia have reinvigorated their relations through the high-level frequent working visit exchanges between the two countries’ officials, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Nebiat Getachew said.

The spokesperson held a press briefing in the early hours of this morning to discuss current national, regional, and international issues.

Ambassador Nebiat highlighted that the efforts to strengthen Ethiopia’s relations with Somalia have proven effective, particularly within the framework of political diplomacy.

The spokesperson noted that the visit of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Mogadishu, Somalia, serves as a clear indication of the improved relations and the start of a new chapter in bilateral ties.

Following the visit, the two countries issued a joint statement, in which Ambassador Nebiat emphasized that the new trajectory in their relationship is not only beneficial for bilateral ties but also crucial for regional peace and security.

Nebiat also noted that the comprehensive development of both nations is interconnected, stressing that Somalia’s security directly impacts Ethiopia’s stability.

He said the two countries have agreed to collaborate on strategic projects that would mutually benefit the peoples of both nations. He also confirmed that Ethiopia would participate in peacekeeping missions in Somalia.

The Ambassador further said that both countries are committed to playing a significant role in the fight against terrorism, contributing to regional and international peace and security, in line with the agreements they have reached.

The Spokesperson reiterated that Ethiopia’s prudent and wise diplomatic approach has led to these positive outcomes.

Ambassador Nebiat also highlighted that the major economic diplomatic event of the week was the Ethiopia-China Trade and Economic Forum held in Addis Ababa.

He further noted that several companies have expressed keen interest in participating in the manufacturing of electric vehicles, agricultural processing equipment, infrastructure development and information and communication technology (ICT).

Regarding citizen-centered diplomacy, the Ambassador mentioned the ongoing efforts to repatriate Ethiopian citizens stranded in Myanmar. He explained that necessary document verification and travel arrangements are currently being made for approximately 246 citizens who crossed from Myanmar to Thailand to return to Ethiopia.

The Spokesperson urged the public to be cautious of misleading advertisements from illegal human traffickers and warned against seeking employment in countries where legal contracts are not honored.

Somali Minister denies blocking former PM Roble’s diplomatic passport clearance

Saturday 1,March 2025 {HMC} Somali State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Mohamed Omar Balcad has denied accusations by former Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs obstructed his diplomatic passport clearance for travel to South Africa.

Speaking to a local television station on Friday, Minister Balcad stated that the South African government had inquired with Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding Roble’s delegation and confirmed that the delegation had been invited to the country.

However, in a statement shared on Facebook by MP Abdullahi Arab, he alleged that Minister Balcad personally blocked the clearance letter and refused to process it through the Ministry’s archives.

“When we realized the letter was blocked and time was running out, I approached the Speaker of Parliament to obtain a visa. Some members of the delegation were unable to travel.”

Former Prime Minister Roble also weighed in on the controversy, revealing that his delegation had submitted an application at the Somali Embassy in Kenya, which remained pending for 20 days, resulting in some delegates missing the trip.

Despite the bureaucratic hurdles, Roble arrived in South Africa last week using his Swedish passport, which he holds as a naturalized citizen. He was accompanied by a delegation that included former Minister of Education Abdullahi Arab, former State Minister for Planning Gaani, and former Banadir regional secretary-general Xiireey.

According to reports, several delegation members ultimately traveled using European passports.

IGAD welcomes renewed Somalia-Ethiopia diplomatic engagement

Saturday 1,March 2025 {HMC} The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has on Friday welcomed the renewed diplomatic engagement between Ethiopia and Somalia following Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s visit to Mogadishu on Thursday.

During talks at Somalia’s presidential palace, Prime Minister Abiy and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation. In a joint statement, the two leaders emphasized the importance of dialogue and regional stability, highlighting ongoing technical discussions in Turkey addressing tensions over Ethiopia’s controversial agreement with Somaliland.

“IGAD remains dedicated to supporting efforts that promote peaceful engagement and sustainable development in the region,” the organization said in a statement.

Tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia escalated in January 2024 when Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland, a self-declared independent region of Somalia. The agreement, which proposed leasing a portion of Somaliland’s coastline for a naval base and commercial port, was widely seen as a step toward Ethiopian recognition of Somaliland’s independence.

Somalia condemned the deal, accusing Ethiopia of violating its sovereignty and territorial integrity. In response, Mogadishu threatened to expel Ethiopian peacekeeping forces from Somalia and strengthened diplomatic ties with Ethiopia’s regional adversaries, Egypt and Eritrea.

The outcome of ongoing negotiations in Turkey will be closely watched, as both nations navigate the complexities of regional security, economic cooperation, and territorial sovereignty.

Jubbaland leader criticizes federal government over power struggles and military failures

Saturday March 1, 2025  {HMC} Jubbaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe has revealed that his decision to walk out of the National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting was due to discussions on extending the federal government’s term—something he firmly opposed.

Speaking to a local media outlet in Kismayo last week, Madobe emphasized that he was the only Darod politician present at the meeting after Puntland’s leader boycotted the talks and SSC-Khatumo was not invited.

Madobe also criticized Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, describing him as a leader without real authority.

“The Somali government today operates like a private company, similar to how things were run in 1991. The Prime Minister has no real power—he is just an employee with no decision-making role,” Madobe stated.

Addressing the recent Raskamboni clashes between federal troops and Jubbaland forces, Madobe claimed that he had repeatedly warned the government about escalating tensions.

“Jubbaland was fully prepared for the battle, and we ensured minimal losses on our side. The results of the conflict were clear, and unfortunately, many Somali soldiers surrendered to Kenya,” he added.

Madobe further accused the Federal Government of constitutional violations and overstepping its legal boundaries, stating that the administration in Mogadishu was dismantling past agreements reached among Somali political stakeholders.

The Jubbaland president also criticized the federal government’s handling of the war against Al-Shabaab, pointing to the militant group’s persistent attacks in Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle as proof of the Somali National Army’s (SNA) lack of will to fight.

However, the Somali military recently announced successful operations, killing over 200 Al-Shabaab fighters in air and ground offensives across Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan. The government says the militant group has suffered heavy losses in recent clashes involving local clan militias.

In November 2023, Jubbaland re-elected Ahmed Madobe for a third term as regional president. However, the Mogadishu-based federal government, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, opposed the election, arguing that it was conducted without federal oversight.
Jubbaland, which borders Kenya and Ethiopia, remains a strategically important region in Somalia’s political and security landscape.
