Somalia, Ethiopia reaffirm commitment to stronger ties in Mogadishu
Thursday 27,Febr-2025 {HMC} Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties during a high-level meeting in Mogadishu on Thursday.
The leaders underscored the importance of security cooperation, welcoming recent agreements between Somali National Army (SNA) and Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) commanders. The collaboration is seen as a crucial step toward enhancing stability in the Horn of Africa, particularly amid ongoing regional security challenges.
Mohamud and Abiy also expressed their shared vision for economic integration, emphasizing the need for strategic infrastructure projects to boost cross-border trade and strengthen people-to-people ties. Ethiopia and Somalia, which share a long and often complex history, acknowledged their interdependence and the necessity of trust-building initiatives to ensure mutual prosperity.
They endorsed the technical talks initiated in Ankara, as per the Ankara Declaration, highlighting their commitment to diplomatic dialogue to resolve disputes and advance regional cooperation. The discussions in Turkey are expected to lay the groundwork for deeper collaboration on political and security matters.
Abiy’s visit coincides with Ethiopia’s formal integration into the African Union’s Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
This week, Somalia and Ethiopia signed a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), formally placing Ethiopian troops operating in Somalia under the oversight of the Somali federal government.

Mortars fired toward airport in Somali capital amid Ethiopian premier’s visit: Report
Thursday 27,Febr-2025 {HMC} Several mortars were fired toward the airport in the Somali capital, as the city prepares for a visit from Ethiopian Prime Minister, local media reported.
According to the Somali Stream website, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was at the airport’s VIP area to welcome Abiy when the incident took place.
The city remains under strict lockdown for heightened security, it said.
A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media, also confirmed to Anadolu that some of the mortars landed close to the Mogadishu Aden Adde International Airport.
The official did not specify if there had been any casualties.
The incident came as Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in the capital Mogadishu for an official visit and was welcomed by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Abiy and Mohamud are expected to hold talks on a range of bilateral issues, including security cooperation, trade relations, and efforts to strengthen ties between their countries.
The two leaders agreed to exchange state visits after Ankara Declaration that ended a nearly year-long standoff between the neighbors.
The Ankara Declaration was reached in December during talks between Abiy and Mohamud hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.
