Somali National Army repels AS attack near Bal’ad district in Middle Shabelle region
Thursday 27, Febr-2025 {HMC} Somali National Army (SNA) forces repelled an AS attack on military bases on the outskirts of Bal’ad district in the Middle Shabelle region early Thursday morning, military officials reported.
According to SNA sources speaking to state media, the attack, launched during the morning prayer hours, resulted in heavy casualties among the militant group.
“A large number of Somali National Army troops have this morning given an unforgettable lesson to the Khawarij militia who attacked military positions on the outskirts of Bal’ad district,” an SNA officer told Somali National Television (SNTV).
While officials did not disclose the exact number of militants killed, they confirmed that several bodies were found scattered across farmlands in the district.
Earlier this week, Somali security forces, supported by international partners, launched a large-scale air and ground offensive in the El Cali Axmed and Al-Kowther areas, eliminating over 70 AS militants.
In recent months, Somalia’s federal government has intensified efforts to reclaim territories held by AS, particularly in the south-central regions. The Middle Shabelle region, which lies strategically between Mogadishu and Hirshabelle state, has witnessed increased militant activity, with Al-Shabab attempting to counter ongoing offensives through ambushes and hit-and-run attacks.
Somalia’s Ministry of Information has reiterated that the ongoing operations aim to neutralize Al-Shabab’s presence and safeguard critical infrastructure, including roads and communication lines, essential for economic recovery and governance efforts. The government has also urged residents in affected areas to cooperate with security forces by reporting suspicious activities linked to AS movements.
Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked extremist group, has waged a violent insurgency in Somalia for over a decade, seeking to overthrow the federal government and impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law. The group frequently targets security forces, government officials, and civilians through bombings, assassinations, and raids on towns and military bases.

The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), in collaboration with international partners, conducted a successful aerial operation last night targeting a al-shabaab Kharijites convoy in Sigato and Labi Aw-Hasan, between Ruun-Nirgood and Al-Kawther districts in Middle Shabelle.
The precision airstrike destroyed multiple vehicles carrying heavy explosives, eliminating the militants escorting them. One of the destroyed vehicles, Prada locally known as Layla Alawi, was intended for an attack on a mosque in Al-Kawther district.
The Kharijites have previously targeted places of worship, including mosques in El Ali Ahmed, Daru-Nimca, Buuloburde, Bahdo, and Qayib. However, this latest operation successfully prevented another devastating attack.
The Somali government reaffirms its commitment to combating terrorism, ensuring national security, and safeguarding civilians from extremist threats. Security operations will continue to eliminate terrorist elements across the country.

Thusday 27, Feb 2025 {HMC} Today, the Somali National Army, in collaboration with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), conducted a joint airstrike operation that significantly impacted Al Shabaab militants following their failed attack on the town of Alkowsar in the Middle Shabelle region of Hirshabelle State.
The airstrike, executed by U.S. AFRICOM in partnership with the Somali National Army, specifically targeted Al Shabaab militants and their leadership, who had been defeated in earlier confrontations with the National Armed Forces and brave local community fighters.
An assessment of enemy casualties from today’s operation is currently underway, and the Somali public will receive updates as more information becomes available.
The Federal Government of Somalia, in collaboration with international partners such as U.S. AFRICOM, remains committed to strengthening joint efforts to eliminate extremist groups that pose a threat to the Somali people and the global community.
