Egypt, Eritrea FMs reaffirm support for Somalia sovereignty and stability in Horn of Africa

0

Friday 6, Dec 2024 {HMC} Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and his Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh reaffirmed supporting Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity as a necessity for maintaining security and stability in the Horn of Africa.

This came during a phone call to discuss enhancing cooperation between the two countries in political, economic, and commercial fields, and consulting on regional issues, read a statement by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday

The call, which comes as part of the trilateral coordination between Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia on regional issues, builds on the inauguration of a new phase of bilateral cooperation between the two brotherly nations, read the ministry’s statement.

Egypt and Eritrea have repeatedly rejected all foreign interference in Somalian affairs and declared their support for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In August, Cairo and Mogadishu signed a military cooperation protocol between the two countries.

During his visit to Eritrea in October, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, his Eritrean counterpart Isaias Afwerki, and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud agreed on the importance of cooperation among the coastal states of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to maintain security along the vital maritime corridor.

“Our three countries, our region, and our shores at the southern and northern entrances of the Red Sea are rich in resources and offer promising opportunities for development and growth,” El-Sisi stated in a press conference after the summit.

On the other side, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki recently visited Egypt to discuss boosting cooperation between the two countries with President El-Sisi.

UNICEF seeks $171 million to support 1.8 million Somalis in 2025.

Friday 6, Dec  2024 {HMC} Mogadishu, Dec 5 (IANS): The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Thursday appealed for $171 million to support 1.8 million people, including 1.1 million children, in Somalia in 2025.

The funds will be used to scale up integrated health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), education, child protection and social protection interventions, UNICEF said, Xinhua news agency reported.

“This funding appeal is 10 per cent less than the 2024 appeal, due to a decrease in the target that is consistent with the downward trend in the number of people in need.

This aligns with UNICEF’s ongoing shift towards longer-term, more resilience-focused and high-impact interventions,” UNICEF said in its latest appeal for Somalia.

The UN agency said it would enhance program integration and implementation of cross-sectoral priorities, including gender equality, disability inclusion and resilience.

Prevention of aid diversion remains a priority, it added.

UNICEF said the financial support in 2025 will enable the UN agency and its partners to deliver integrated multisectoral services and expand services to hard-to-reach locations.

The impact of climate change, disease outbreaks and poverty in Somalia is staggering, UNICEF said, warning that despite greater stability in some areas of the country, ongoing conflict continues to cause displacement and restricts access to services.

In 2025, UNICEF said 6.9 million people, including 4.3 million children, need humanitarian assistance.

Anticipated poor rainfall related to the La Nina weather pattern is likely to push the number of people facing food crisis from 3.6 million to 4.4 million by December, it said.

UNICEF said the number of children under the age of five at risk of wasting could rise to 1.6 million by July 2025, with 403,000 expected to be severely wasted.

“Combined with conflict and disease outbreaks, about 6.9 million people, including 4.3 million children, 1.1 million women and 310,000 people with disabilities, require urgent humanitarian aid in 2025. Expected rainfall shortages could worsen the food crisis, affecting up to 4.4 million people,” it said.

Sir Mo Farah on Friendships, Loneliness and Retirement: ‘When I Run, I’m Happy’

0

Friday December 6, 2024
By Reiss Smith

Sir Mo Farah is running again. This time, though, medals couldn’t be further from his mind.

‘One of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen,’ is how Sir Mo Farah was described on the day of his final competitive race, by the BBC’s Steve Cram. That was 14 months ago, when the quadruple Olympic gold medallist and six-time world champion bowed out at the Great North Run.

In order to become the best, Farah trained. Hard. He ran 120 miles a week, kept up with all the other commitments that come with being a world-renowned athlete, and held down a busy family life as a father-of-four. As he racked up records and titles he became a national hero, with the weight of expectations growing heavier on his shoulders. He came out the other side surprisingly well, but admits that sometimes, it wasn’t easy.

‘Often, being an athlete is about competing and winning medals, but in order to win you have to go through so many different things,’ he tells Men’s Health. ‘Maybe training hasn’t gone well, maybe you’ve got an injury. And if you don’t have the right people in your life who can help you get through that...’

Did he ever get lonely? ‘So many times,’ he says. But throughout his career, he found that the cure to loneliness is connection. Peers became great friends – in particular Adam Clarke, who he trained closely with over the years. While running with Clarke and others, ‘we would talk about everything’, Farah says, about ‘whatever is on your mind, if they’re struggling, if things aren’t going well, if the pressure’s getting to them. We’d talk about football, we’d share things. We had no filter. And for me, that’s the beauty of friendship. We could talk about anything.’

Social relationships are crucial for good mental health. But sometimes life gets in the way. Responsibilities take priority over catching up with friends, and as the distance grows it becomes more difficult to reach out. It happens to the best of us, which is why Farah has teamed up with Movember and L’Oréal Men Expert for a new campaign.

Farah and L’Oréal want men to follow in his nimble footsteps: to use running as a space for connection, ‘to face loneliness together’.

It’s not always easy to talk about how you’re feeling. ‘Often we think it’s not OK,’ Farah says. ‘You think you can’t talk about it because you’re strong, you’re a man. But we’re all human, right?’ Doing something physical, like running, can take the pressure off and help conversation to flow. If nothing else, it’s usually much easier to arrange a run than a trip to the pub.

It’s not complicated, there’s no pressure,’ Farah continues. ‘You can just go out, connect, have a conversation in person. Dig a little deeper. Sometimes, it’s just: “How’s your day? Did you watch the football?” Often the hardest thing is taking that first step.’

Just before our interview, Farah took part in the opening and closing legs of 44km relay run to promote the L’Oreal and Movember campaign, which continues beyond the month of November. ‘It was about being able to share, to connect, getting to know people. I really enjoyed it,’ he says, adding that it was also a nice opportunity to run without the pressure of competition, something he has embraced since retirement.

‘I do miss competing,’ he admits. ‘I miss putting myself out there and I miss winning medals for my country. But at the same time, I don’t miss doing 120 miles a week. I’ll always be a runner, for my mental health. Now I enjoy time spent running with my kids. When I run, I feel free, I feel happy. That’s the one place I can be myself.’
