6 killed by bomb blasts in Somalia after leader addresses UN

0

Sunday 29, Sep  2024 {HMC} Bomb blasts in Mogadishu and a town in the country’s Middle Shabelle region killed at least six people and injured 10 others Saturday, police said and witnesses confirmed to VOA.

“An explosives-laden vehicle, which was parked on the road near a restaurant in the busy Hamar Weyne district, went off. I could see the dead bodies of at least three people, two of them women,” Mohamed Haji Nur, a witness, told VOA.

The explosion site is opposite of Somalia’s National Theater, about one kilometer from the president’s office.

The target of the attack is still unknown, but the affected Gel Doh restaurant is frequented by government staff and people from the diaspora for serving traditional Somali food.

In a separate incident, a bomb planted in a livestock market in Jowhar city in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region killed one person and injured three other civilians, Jowhar police Commander Bashir Hassan told a news conference.

It was not immediately clear who had carried out the attacks. However, the Islamist militant group al-Shabab is known for orchestrating bombings and gun attacks in Mogadishu and elsewhere in the Horn of Africa country.

Barre addressed UN General Assembly

Somalian Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre publicly accused Ethiopia before the U.N. General Assembly on Friday of actions that he says “flagrantly violate” Somalia’s territorial integrity.

This accusation comes as tensions continue to escalate between the two neighboring countries since January, when Ethiopia struck a controversial maritime deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland.

This region, at the northern tip of the country, declared independence in 1991 but lacks international recognition.

Under the deal, Somaliland would lease 20 kilometers of shoreline to Ethiopia in return for recognition, a move that raised alarms in Mogadishu.

“Somalia currently faces a serious threat from Ethiopia’s recent actions, which flagrantly violate our territorial integrity,” Prime Minister Barre stated at the U.N. General Assembly.

Somalia has accused Ethiopia of unlawfully attempting to build a naval base and commercial port in Somaliland.

“Ethiopia’s attempt to annex part of Somalia under the guise of securing sea access is both unlawful and unnecessary,” Barre emphasized, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Ethiopia, a landlocked nation, has long sought access to the sea, but its move to deal with Somaliland infuriated the Somali government.

Barre elaborated on the implications of Ethiopia’s actions, saying, “Somalia ports have always been accessible for Ethiopia’s legitimate commercial activities, reflecting our commitment to regional trade and cooperation.”

He warned, though, that “Ethiopia’s aggressive maneuvers undermine Somalia’s sovereignty and embolden secessionist movements, which could threaten national unity.”

“These actions also serve as propaganda for terrorist groups like al-Shabab, who exploit Ethiopia’s provocations to recruit and radicalize vulnerable individuals,” he said.

Ethiopia denies accusations

Addressing the General Debate of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Taye Atske-Selassie, minister for foreign affairs of Ethiopia, denied Somalia’s accusation.

“Ethiopia’s memorandum of understanding with Somaliland is based on existing political dispensation in Somalia,” he said.

“Our objective is a shared growth and prosperity in the region. Similar agreements have been concluded by other states, and there is no reason for the government of Somalia to incite hostility that obviously intends to cover internal political tensions. I therefore reject the unfounded allegations leveled against my country.”

In a show of defiance, several times Somalia has threatened to expel Ethiopian troops who have been part of an African Union mission against al-Shabab militants since 2007.

Afyare Abdi Elmi, a Mogadishu-based professor of international affairs, told VOA that recent Egyptian military cooperation with Somalia raised concerns in Addis Ababa.

“The stakes are raised further, as Mogadishu has signed a military deal with Cairo and received weapons shipments that have alarmed Ethiopian officials.”

“I am afraid that the unfolding events signal a crucial moment in the Horn of Africa, with the potential to reshape the region’s geopolitical landscape and security dynamics,” said Somalia analyst Abdiqafar Abdi Wardhere, who is based in Virginia.

Last week, the Somali government accused Ethiopia of sending an “unauthorized shipment of arms and ammunition” to Somalia’s semiautonomous region of Puntland.

“Ethiopia must be held accountable for actions threatening to destabilize the Horn of Africa,” Barre warned in his speech to the U.N. General Assembly.

As the African Union mission prepares to transform at the end of the year, Egypt has offered to replace Ethiopian troops for the first time.

Somalia may also push for the removal of the estimated 10,000 Ethiopian troops stationed in Somalia’s regions along the border, aimed at preventing incursions by Islamist militants.

Although he did not name Egypt, Ethiopia’s foreign minister said that other actors’ actions are undermining regional stability.

“The recent maneuvers of actors from the outside of the Horn of Africa region undermine these efforts. Ethiopia will not be deterred from its resolute commitment to combating terrorism,” Atske-Selassie said. “I am confident that the government of Somalia will reckon and recognize the sacrifice we made to Somalia’s liberation from the grip of terrorist groups.”

China starts import of dried sea cucumber from Kenya.

0

Sunday 29, Sep  2024 {HMC} A batch of Kenyan dried sea cucumbers, weighing 300 kg, were transported to Changsha Huanghua International Airport in central China’s Hunan Province, marking the first time that China has imported such products from Kenya.

Sea cucumber, known for being high in protein, low in fat and low in cholesterol, has enjoyed growing popularity among Chinese consumers.

According to Changsha Customs, sea cucumber products imported by China mainly come from North America, northern Europe and other places, and China’s import of such products from Kenya has enriched its import channels.

In the first eight months of this year, Hunan imported about 300 million yuan (about 42.8 million U.S. dollars) of agricultural products from Africa, a year-on-year increase of 31.9 percent, according to the customs.

Ethiopia defends MoU with Somaliland

0

Sunday 29, Sep  2024 {HMC} Toronto – Ethiopia has been mostly silent about the Memorandum of Understanding it signed with Somaliland while Somalia delved into garnering military, diplomatic and military support from the region on alleged grounds that the agreement violates its sovereignty.

Now Ethiopia is openly defending the agreement and did so at the U.N. General Assembly.

An update from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs cited Taye Atske-Selassie, the Minister, as saying, in his speech at the U.N. , the MoU with Somaliland is ” based on existing political dispensation in Somalia…”

Ethiopia also made claims that the “objective is shared growth and prosperity in the region.” Another point that the Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Minister made at the assembly is that similar agreements have been with other states.

Taye added that ” there is no reason for the Federal Government of Somalia to incite hostility that obviously intends to cover internal political tensions.”

The contributions of Ethiopia along with nations in the region to protect Somalia from terrorist groups and the sacrifices made in that regard was also highlighted – apparently to demonstrate that Ethiopia does not have ill-intentions against Somalia. But activists from Somalia would reduce this point to “service was not in exchange for land.”

The MoU agreement with Somaliland – the break away region of Somalia that existed as a de facto state with its own defense force and foreign relations for thirty four years now – offers Ethiopia 20 Kilometers of coastal land on a rental basis for fifty years in exchange for recognition from Ethiopia as an Independent state. There is more to the agreement but details were not released as it was not finalized. Somaliland sources have recently been reporting that the agreement is to be finalized “soon.”

The development has caused tension in the region. Calls for the two countries to de-escalate the tension does not seem to be much of a success as Somalia is focused on forging military alliances. Egypt, a country with long history of hostility towards Ethiopia and has supported many rebel groups, exploited the situation and signed a military agreement with Hassan Sheik Government in Mogadishu, and have been shipping firearms including anti-aircraft missiles. Eritrea, now noticeably hostile to Abiy Ahmed’s government, has joined the alliance. Before even the MoU , Eritrea had trained tens of thousands of forces for the Hassan Sheikh government. Egypt is poised to deploy 10,000 troops to Somalia – a move that triggered opposition to Hassan Sheik’s government.

Ethiopia sees Egypt’s planned military presence in Somalia and shipment of heavy and light weaponry as a move that risks instability in the entire region.

Egypt rejects unilateralism on Nile, defends Somalia’s sovereignty

0

Sunday 29, Sep  2024 {HMC} Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, addressing the General Debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, highlighted Egypt’s concerns over the Nile River water crisis and condemned unilateral actions that threaten Somalia’s sovereignty.

Addressing the Nile River issue, Abdelatty emphasised that Egypt’s vision for resolving the water crisis was based on benefiting all parties and ensuring fair use without harming downstream countries. He accused Ethiopia of violating international law and acting unilaterally in the matter.

“Egypt’s vision for resolving the water crisis was based on benefiting all parties and fair use without harm to downstream countries,” Abdelatty said. “Ethiopia violated international law and handled the water issue unilaterally.”

“Anyone who thinks Egypt will compromise on any existential threat is mistaken,” Abdelatty warned on Ethiopia’s Nile dam issue.

He also condemned all unilateral actions that threaten Somalia’s unity and sovereignty over its entire territory.

Abdelatty also condemned the Israeli attacks on Lebanon and called for an immediate ceasefire. He criticised Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank, arguing that they have exposed the weakness and double standards of the international community. Abdelatty also stressed the need for reform within the UN system to effectively address global challenges.

“We condemn the Israeli attacks on Lebanon and call for an immediate ceasefire,” Abdelatty said.

“Israel’s brutal aggression in Gaza and the West Bank has exposed the weakness and double standards of the international community,” Abdelatty said. “The legitimacy of the United Nations is at stake, and the global system needs reform to address the scale of challenges we face.”

Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s efforts to mediate a resolution to the conflict. “Egypt and Qatar mediated for an agreement, but Israel obstructed the negotiations,” he said.

Abdelatty also addressed the situation in Sudan, expressing Egypt’s support for a political solution that ensures the unity and peace of the country and strengthens its institutions. He called for a political resolution in Libya that ends the transitional phase and paves the way for presidential and parliamentary elections.
