Defiant Khamenei slams protests as Iran presses internet shutdown.

0

Friday 9 Jun 2026 {HMC} Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, on Friday vowed the Islamic Republic would not back down in the face of the biggest protests in years, as authorities pressed an internet blackout as part of a crackdown that has left dozens dead.

Protests have taken place across Iran for 13 days in a movement sparked by anger over the rising cost of living that is now marked by calls for the end of the clerical system that has ruled Iran since the 1979 revolution that ousted the pro-Western shah.

Internet monitor Netblocks said authorities had now imposed a “nationwide internet shutdown” for the last 24 hours that was violating the rights of Iranians and “masking regime violence”.

Casualties rising

Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights, raising a previous toll of 45 issued the day earlier, said at least 51 protesters, including nine children under the age of 18, have been killed by security forces and hundreds more injured.

The demonstrations represent one of the biggest challenges yet to the Islamic Republic in its over four-and-a-half decades of existence.

The protests late Thursday were the biggest in Iran since 2022-2023 rallies nationwide, sparked by the death in custody of Mahsa Amini after she was arrested for allegedly violating the Republic’s strict dress code.

“Vandals and saboteurs”

However, Khamenei struck a defiant tone in his first comments on the escalating protests since January 3, calling the demonstrators “vandals” and “saboteurs”, in a speech broadcast on state TV.

Khamenei said US President Donald Trump’s hands “are stained with the blood of more than a thousand Iranians”, in apparent reference to Israel’s June war against the Islamic republic which the US supported and joined with strikes of its own.

He predicted the “arrogant” US leader would be “overthrown” like the imperial dynasty that ruled Iran up to the 1979 revolution.

“Last night in Tehran, a bunch of vandals came and destroyed a building that belongs to them to please the US president,” he said in an address to supporters, as men and women in the audience chanted the mantra of “death to America”.

“Everyone knows the Islamic Republic came to power with the blood of hundreds of thousands of honourable people; it will not back down in the face of saboteurs.”

Threats by US President Trump

Trump said late Thursday that “enthusiasm to overturn that regime is incredible” and warned that if the Iranian authorities responded by killing protesters, “we’re going to hit them very hard. We’re ready to do it.”

In the Fox News interview, Trump went as far as to suggest 86-year-old Khamenei may be looking to leave Iran.

“He’s looking to go someplace,” he said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, on a visit to Lebanon, on Friday accused Washington and Israel of “directly intervening” to try to “transform the peaceful protests into divisive and violent ones”.

US-based Pahlavi calls on Trump to intervene

The exiled son of Iran’s late shah on Friday appealed to US President Donald Trump to intervene urgently as protests persisted in the Islamic republic.

“Mr. President, this is an urgent and immediate call for your attention, support and action,” Reza Pahlavi wrote on social media. “Please be prepared to intervene to help the people of Iran.”

Pahlavi, who lives in the Washington area, did not specify the intervention he was seeking but pointed both to an internet blackout and the threat of the use of force against protesters.

“I have called the people to the streets to fight for their freedom and to overwhelm the security forces with sheer numbers. Last night they did that,” he wrote.

“Maximum punishment for protestors”

Judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei warned that punishment of “rioters” would be “decisive, the maximum and without any legal leniency”.

Quoted by state television, he said a district prosecutor in the town of Esfarayen in eastern Iran and several members of the security forces had been killed late Thursday in the protests.

The intelligence branch of the Revolutionary Guards, the security force entrusted with ensuring the preservation of the Republic, said the “continuation of this situation is unacceptable” and protecting the revolution was its “red line”.

India Supports Somalia After Israel’s Somaliland Recognition.

0

Friday 9 Jun 2026 {HMC} strongly backed Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity following Israel’s recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland, while adopting a notably restrained position on rising tensions over Greenland amid increasingly forceful rhetoric from the United States.

“India has longstanding ties with Somalia. We continue to underline the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)’s spokesperson stated when asked about the recognition of Somaliland.

The statement came after Israel became the first United Nations member state to formally recognise Somaliland as independent on December 26.

Somaliland, a self-declared republic in the Horn of Africa, broke away from Somalia in 1991 after the collapse of the central government and the outbreak of civil war.

Despite maintaining its own administration, currency and armed forces and holding periodic elections for more than three decades, it remained internationally unrecognised until Israel’s move last month.

The African Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the European Union have reiterated that Somalia’s territorial integrity should be respected.

International concerns have grown over allegations that Israel’s recognition was linked to strategic considerations, including Somaliland’s proximity to the Red Sea and Yemen’s Houthi-controlled territory.

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has alleged that Somaliland agreed to host Israeli military facilities along the Gulf of Aden and resettle displaced Palestinians from Gaza in exchange for recognition.

Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied these claims, stating its engagement with Israel was “purely diplomatic” and conducted “in full respect of international law”.

India’s position on Somaliland reflects broader strategic interests in the Horn of Africa and the Indian Ocean Region.

According to the Indian high commission in Nairobi, which oversees relations with Somalia, India has provided development, capacity-building and humanitarian assistance to Somalia over the years.

The two nations have cooperated on maritime security issues, particularly concerning piracy in the waters off Somalia’s coast, which directly impacts Indian commercial shipping lanes. India has also been involved in training Somali security personnel and has extended lines of credit for development projects.

New Delhi’s unequivocal backing of Somali sovereignty stands in contrast to its otherwise close relationship with Israel.

India had to debunk fake news earlier this month when viral social media

posts falsely claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi had held talks with Somaliland’s leadership and was preparing to recognise the breakaway region.

The MEA FactCheck unit called the posts fake and urged vigilance against misinformation.

In stark contrast to its forthright position on Somaliland, India’s response to the Greenland situation has been subdued.

“We have seen on the Greenland part, we have seen the recent media reports in this regard.

We are closely following the developments,” the MEA spokesperson said when asked about US President Donald Trump’s repeated assertions about acquiring Greenland.

The White House has stated that “all options” are on the table for acquiring Greenland, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt saying Trump isn’t ruling out any options though diplomacy is his “first option”.

Trump has asserted that the US needs Greenland for national security purposes, pointing to Russian and Chinese activities in the region. The president told reporters that Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships and that Denmark cannot adequately secure it.

The leaders of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the UK issued a joint statement defending Greenland’s sovereignty, saying it “belongs to its people” and that “it is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland”.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that any US attack on Greenland would spell the end of NATO and post-World War II security arrangements.

She stated that if the US decides to attack another NATO country, “then everything would stop – that includes NATO and therefore post-World War II security”.

Greenland, the world’s largest island with a population of approximately 57,000 people, holds significant strategic value.

It sits between the US and Russia and is rich in critical minerals and rare earth elements essential for modern technologies, from wind turbines to electric vehicles and defence applications.

The US already maintains a military presence in Greenland through the Pituffik Space Base, formerly Thule Air Base, established under a 1951 defence agreement with Denmark.

Vice President JD Vance travelled to the island in March 2025 where he said it was “the policy of the United States” to see changes to the island’s Danish leadership but acknowledged that Greenlanders should decide their future.

India’s cautious approach on Greenland mirrors its response to the recent US military action in Venezuela, where American forces captured President Nicolas Maduro earlier this month.

India described the developments as a “matter of deep concern” and urged all parties to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region.

The statement was carefully worded and avoided naming Washington or condemning the military strikes.

It also made no reference to sovereignty, territorial integrity, international law or the UN Charter.

This differed markedly from responses from most other nations like Brazil, whose President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned the strikes as crossing “an unacceptable line” and a violation of international law.

China’s top diplomat skips historic Somalia visit in Africa tour.

0

Friday 9 Jun 2026 {HMC} China’s top diplomat Wang Yi skipped what would have been a historic visit to Somalia on Friday, instead proceeding straight to Tanzania on his tour of African countries.

The visit would have been the first by a Chinese foreign minister to Somalia since the state collapsed in 1991, and was planned at a high-profile moment just after Israel recognised the breakaway region of Somaliland.

“The visit of the Chinese government delegation to Somalia today was delayed due to technical issues.

The Chinese government will issue a formal statement about this matter,” an official at the Somali presidential palace told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Wang instead flew directly to the next stop on his itinerary, Tanzania, and was due to meet President Samia Suluhu Hassan in Dar es Salaam.

China has invested heavily in Tanzania in recent years, particularly in the country’s low-tax special economic zones, where 343 Chinese-funded projects worth $3.1 billion were registered in 2025 alone, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

“The visit aims to further strengthen and deepen the strategic relations and cooperation,” Tanzania’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Wang was in Ethiopia on Thursday to meet Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the head of the African Union, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

A joint statement by Wang and the African Union criticised the Israeli recognition of Somaliland.

After Tanzania, Wang is due in Lesotho, which has seen its relations with Washington strained after being hit by punishing US tariffs.
