Landslides in Kenya’s Rift Valley leave 21 dead, 30 others missing

Sundey , November 02, 2025 {HMC}   Heavy rains have triggered landslides in Kenya’s western Rift Valley region, killing at least 21 people and destroying more than 1,000 homes, according to officials.

Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for the Interior Kipchumba Murkomen, in a statement on X on Saturday, said at least 25 people with “serious injuries” have been airlifted from Elgeyo-Marakwet County to the city of Eldoret for medical attention, while at least 30 remain missing.

He said that rescue efforts would resume on Sunday, with help from the military and the police.

“Preparation to supply more food and non-food relief items to the victims is underway. Military and police choppers are on standby to transport the items,” he added.

The landslide occurred overnight in Elgeyo-Marakwet County’s hilly area of Chesongoch in western Kenya, which has been battered by heavy rains amid the country’s ongoing short rainy season.

Local Stephen Kittony told the Citizen Television station that he heard a deafening sound and, together with his children, rushed out of his house and ran in different directions.

The Kenyan Red Cross shared aerial images from the region that showed massive mudslides and flash flooding stretching over vast distances.

It said it was coordinating rescue efforts with the government, including air evacuations for the injured.

“Access to some of the affected areas remains extremely difficult due to flooding and blocked routes,” it said in a statement on X.

The hilly area of Chesongoch is prone to landslides, which left dozens of people dead in separate incidents in 2010 and 2012. A shopping centre was washed away in 2020 by raging floods.

Sundey , November 02, 2025 {HMC}  Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has congratulated Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election, praising her leadership and reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral and regional cooperation.

“I extend warm congratulations to H.E. Samia Suluhu on her re-election as President of the United Republic of Tanzania,” President Mohamud said in a statement on Saturday.

 

“Her victory reflects the trust and confidence of the Tanzanian people. Somalia looks forward to deepening our brotherly ties and advancing regional peace and prosperity,” he added. 

Tanzania’s electoral commission announced that President Samia Suluhu Hassan secured 97.66 percent of the vote in Wednesday’s election, which was marred by controversy after leading opposition candidates were barred from contesting.

Election day saw heavy security across major cities, and according to witnesses, protests erupted in several areas where demonstrators tore down campaign posters, set fire to government buildings, and clashed with police. Security forces reportedly used tear gas and fired shots to disperse crowds.

Internet monitoring group NetBlocks said social media platforms and mobile internet access were restricted nationwide during and after the vote.

President Samia, who first took office in 2021 following the death of her predecessor John Magufuli, becomes Tanzania’s first woman to win re-election, consolidating her leadership in the East African nation.

Sundey , November 02, 2025 {HMC}    Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday attended the grand opening of Egypt’s new Grand Egyptian Museum, the world’s largest archaeological complex dedicated to a single civilization.

The ceremony, held at the foot of the Giza Plateau, was inaugurated by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and attended by delegations from 79 countries, including 39 led by kings, princes, and heads of state and government.

 

The launch featured a musical performance in one of the museum’s courtyards, with the iconic pyramids serving as a dramatic backdrop.

 

During his visit, President Mohamud is expected to highlight the historic and cultural ties between the peoples of Somalia and Egypt, emphasizing the importance of strengthening bilateral relations.

The vision for the Grand Egyptian Museum dates back to the 1990s, when then–Culture Minister Farouk Hosni proposed creating an open museum complex connecting the pyramids, the Sphinx, and surrounding temples. Former President Hosni Mubarak laid the foundation stone in 2002, and site preparation began in 2005, though construction stalled for several years.

Work resumed in 2014 under President Sisi, who expanded the project into what is now the largest museum dedicated to a single civilization in human history. Between 2017 and 2023, Egypt completed construction, digital infrastructure, exhibition design, and service facilities, leading to trial operations in October 2024.

Located just two kilometers from the Giza Pyramids, the 490,000-square-meter museum offers visitors panoramic views through a five-story glass façade aligned with the height of the Great Pyramid. The complex also houses more than 100,000 artifacts, including the complete collection of King Tutankhamun’s treasures.

The project, estimated to have cost around $1 billion, was financed through two Japanese loans totaling $800 million, along with contributions from the Egyptian government, donations, and international partnerships.

Sundey , November 02, 2025 {HMC}  Puntland security forces have on Saturday captured a foreign fighter from Saudi Arabia believed to be a member of the Islamic State (ISIS) group during a large-scale operation in the Cal Miskaat mountains, officials said Friday.

The arrest took place between the Arabi and Maragade areas, a rugged terrain long used as a hideout by ISIS militants.

 

Officials leading the anti-ISIS offensive said the operation, which has now reached its final stages in the Baallade River area, has resulted in the capture of several ISIS members alive. 

Puntland authorities have intensified counterterrorism operations in the Bari region in recent months, targeting extremist cells that have operated from mountain strongholds for years.

President Said Abdullahi Deni recently declared that Puntland forces had dismantled ISIS’s military and financial networks in the region, calling the campaign a significant step toward restoring lasting security.

The ongoing operations mark one of Puntland’s most sustained efforts in years to eliminate the militant group’s presence in northeastern Somalia.
