Mondey , 1 September, 2025 (Hmc) Kenya’s Trade Minister Lee Kinyanjui and his Ugandan counterpart, Wilson Mbasu, met in Mbale, Eastern Uganda, on Friday and resolved to fully align all trade-related commitments with the East African Community (EAC) Treaty and related protocols.
This decision followed a directive from Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni during their bilateral engagement held in Nairobi from July 30 to 31, 2025.
In a joint communiqué, the ministers agreed to decongest major cross-border points—Malaba, Busia, Suam, and Lwakhakha—to facilitate the seamless flow of goods, services, and people.
“It is a serious concern to receive numerous complaints affecting business at the border points. We are committed to restoring normalcy at all cross-border points,” said Kinyanjui.
Minister Mbasu added, “We support an on-the-spot check of the One-Stop Border Posts (OSBPs). Facilitating the free movement of goods, services, and people is critical. Follow-up inspections will help confirm whether these posts are functioning as intended under the EAC framework and regional economic integration goals.”
On the elimination of Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs), both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to removing all existing tariffs and NTBs that hinder trade between Kenya and Uganda.
They also agreed to fully implement all trade-related obligations under the EAC Treaty and its protocols. In this regard, the ministers resolved to eliminate all discriminatory excise duties, levies, and other charges with equivalent effects.
To address border congestion, the ministers directed border agencies to clear the current backlog within 24 hours and maintain congestion at no more than four kilometers.
“The ministers further instructed border agencies to immediately address delays caused by multiple checkpoints and emphasized the need for 24/7 operations by all border management agencies,” read a joint communiqué signed by the both Ministers.

Mondey , 1 September, 2025 (Hmc) The Somali Salvation Forum, led by former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, has accused the federal government of neglecting the fight against terrorist groups while focusing on selling public land.
The opposition group, which concluded a two-day meeting in Mogadishu on Sunday, urged government leaders to reach an inclusive political agreement and hold local elections as soon as possible.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the Forum declared it would not accept any extension of the current administration’s mandate beyond the scheduled presidential election date of May 15, 2026.
“To save the country from political uncertainty, the remaining short time in the term of the Parliament and the President should be used to agree on a viable, inclusive election — better than the one in 2022,” the statement read.
The Forum also called on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to reverse what it described as “illegal amendments” to the 2012 constitution, warning that such changes risk plunging the country into chaos and creating conflicting legal frameworks.
“The Forum considers the electoral law, the party law, and the Electoral Commission established by the President to be a blatant deception. The delay in elections at the local, state, and federal levels is simply an attempt to extend the term,” the statement added.
The meeting comes just days after several prominent opposition leaders who previously belonged to the Somali Salvation Forum signed an electoral framework agreement with the federal government.

Mondey , 1 September, 2025 (Hmc) Yemen’s Houthis said on Monday they launched a missile towards the Liberia-flagged Israeli-owned tanker ‘Scarlet Ray’ ship near Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea port city of Yanbu.
British maritime security firm Ambrey said on Sunday that a the tanker reported an explosion nearby, southwest of Yanbu.
In a later update, Ambrey said it assessed the vessel to be “aligned with” the targets of Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis’ profile given that it was publicly Israeli-owned.
Since 2023, the Houthis have been attacking vessels in the Red Sea that they deem to be affiliated with Israel in what they describe as support of Palestinians in Gaza.
UKMTO did not identify the party responsible, but said authorities were investigating.
Saudi Arabia led a coalition that launched a military campaign in Yemen from early 2015 to support the Gulf-backed government against the Houthis, who had seized the capital Sanaa in 2014.
The coalition has in the past foiled attempted assaults using explosive-laden boats it says were launched by the Houthis.

Mondey , 1 September, 2025 (Hmc) A high-level military delegation from Egypt arrived in Mogadishu on Sunday ahead of the planned deployment of an Egyptian contingent to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The 16-member delegation, led by Maj. Gen. Islam Radwan, was received by officers from AUSSOM and the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF). The officials later held meetings with AUSSOM leadership, including the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) and Head of Mission, Amb. El Hadji Ibrahima Diene, before attending a security briefing at AUSSOM Force Headquarters.
The delegation also participated in a comprehensive security briefing at the ATMIS headquarters in Mogadishu.
During their stay, the Egyptian officers are expected to inspect key facilities related to the deployment and logistical arrangements for Egyptian troops both in Mogadishu and in the field.
The deployment, recently approved by the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC), marks Egypt’s formal inclusion in AUSSOM operations in Somalia.
The move comes as Somalia continues to confront the persistent threat posed by al-Shabaab, the al-Qaeda-linked militant group entrenched in rural strongholds despite ongoing military campaigns. Somali forces, supported by regional and international partners, remain engaged in operations to weaken the group and secure government-held areas.

Mondey , 1 September, 2025 (Hmc) The Somali federal government has officially completed the process of establishing the Northeastern administration, integrating the Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn regions into the federal structure of Somalia.
The process, described as a product of “consultation, perseverance, and strong determination,” began last year when local leaders formed a transitional administration known as SSC-Khaatumo.
According to the Ministry of Interior, key milestones included, the approval of the administrative constitution at a regional conference on July 30, 2025, the selection of an 83-member regional parliament on August 17, the election of the new Speakers of Parliament on August 23, and the election of the president and vice president of the new state on August 30.
The Interior Minister spent 53 days in Las Anod to oversee the formation process, expressing gratitude to traditional elders, scholars, civil society, and residents of the region for their patience and contributions. The government also praised the Technical Committee for Administrative Formation for facilitating consultations and building public confidence.
The Ministry described the creation of the Northeastern state as “a major achievement for the people of the region and a symbol of unity, solidarity, and the consolidation of Somalia’s federal system.”
On Saturday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre congratulated Abdiqadir Ahmed Aw-Ali, known as Firdhiye, and Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril following their election as president and vice president of the new state in Las Anod.
Firdhiye, who previously served as interim leader of SSC-Khaatumo, secured the presidency after rivals withdrew and lawmakers realigned their votes. Jibril, a former Puntland parliament speaker and poet close to Firdhiye, was elected deputy president. Both men were widely seen as Mogadishu’s preferred candidates—a perception that fueled opposition allegations of federal interference in the process.
