Ethiopia, Dangote Group ink $2.5 billion deal to build fertilizer complex in Gode, Somali region

friday  29 Aug 2025 {HMC}Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH), the government’s strategic investment arm, and Dangote Group have signed a landmark shareholders’ agreement to develop and operate a $2.5 billion urea fertilizer production complex in Gode, Somali Regional State.

According to a statement released today, EIH will hold a 40% equity stake, while Dangote Group will retain 60% ownership. The facility, with a planned capacity of three million metric tons of urea annually, will be among the top five largest urea production complexes globally and the single largest in Ethiopia’s history.

The project includes construction of fertilizer plants and associated infrastructure, including a pipeline to transport natural gas from the Calub and Hilala gas fields. It also envisions potential expansion into ammonia-based fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, and calcium ammonium nitrate.

Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Group, described the agreement as “a pivotal moment in our shared vision to industrialize Africa and achieve food security.” He added that Ethiopia’s location and gas reserves make Gode an ideal site for what will become “one of the world’s largest fertilizer complexes.”

Brook Taye (PhD), CEO of Ethiopian Investment Holdings, called the deal “a significant milestone in Ethiopia’s journey toward industrial self-sufficiency and agricultural modernization.” He stressed that the utilization of domestic gas reserves would ensure “energy security and cost competitiveness for decades to come.”

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the project will create local jobs and ensure a reliable fertilizer supply for farmers who have long faced challenges, describing it as “a decisive step in our path to food sovereignty.” He added that the initiative “strengthens Ethiopia’s competitiveness across the continent and reflects our commitment to executing strategic investments that serve our people and our future.”

PM Abiy first spoke of the fertilizer factory which he said will be inaugurated after 40 months of development during a parliamentary session on 03 July 2025. Highlighting the critical link between domestic fertilizer production and agricultural productivity, he said, “the agricultural sector will only be complete and effective when there is a local fertilizer factory.”

The announcement was made a week after Ethiopia reached an agreement with Dangote Industries to establish a large-scale fertilizer plant in the Somali Regional State.

The deal expands Dangote’s presence in Ethiopia, where it already operates a cement plant, while marking another milestone for EIH following its first international investment in Akobo Minerals.

Agriculture, which employs over 70% of Ethiopia’s population, is expected to benefit directly from the project through improved access to fertilizer at competitive prices. The partners highlighted that the project would boost crop yields, enhance food security, and generate economic benefits beyond Ethiopia by supplying fertilizers to neighboring countries.

Farmers in Ethiopia face a severe shortage of chemical fertilizers – now costing twice as much as last year-threatening both crop yields and livelihoods. Each year, subsistence farmers across the country grapple with limited access to fertilizer, raising fears of missing the planting season.

Somalia launches e-Visa system to boost travel and security

friday  29 Aug 2025 {HMC}  Somalia has unveiled a new Electronic Visa and Travel Authorization System (E-Visa/ETAS), marking a major step in modernizing its immigration services.

The Somali Immigration and Citizenship Agency announced that the system will go live on September 1, 2025, through a dedicated online portal.

The government says the move will simplify travel, enhance transparency, and strengthen national security.

With the rollout, all travelers entering Somalia will be required to apply online for an e-Visa.

Applicants can submit requests from anywhere in the world, with the system designed to cut wait times and streamline approvals.

Isxaaq Hassan Taakow, Director of the Department of Foreigners and Entry Permits, said the platform has built-in checks and balances to ensure efficiency.

A specialized team has been trained to manage it securely.

“This is a modern solution built to serve travelers while protecting national interests,” he noted.

Director General Mustafa Sheikh Ali Dhuxulow hailed the initiative as a milestone in Somalia’s digital transformation.

“It demonstrates Somalia’s commitment to integration with global systems. It also supports economic growth and safeguards sensitive data,” he said.

Certain groups will remain exempt from the new policy, including holders of multiple-entry visas, diplomatic and UNLP passports, residency permit holders, and citizens from countries with visa-free arrangements with Somalia.

Internal Security Minister Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag underlined the financial transparency benefits of the system.

“All visa fees will go directly to government accounts, helping to strengthen our financial institutions,” he explained.

The introduction of e-Visa aligns with Somalia’s broader push to attract investment, tourism, and international trade.

It also follows the country’s admission last year into the East African Community (EAC), a regional bloc that allows free movement of goods and people among its eight members.

Despite persistent security challenges from Al-Shabaab, officials say the new system signals Somalia’s determination to position itself as a regional economic hub.

Four African states running out of special food for starving children, aid group says

friday  29 Aug 2025 {HMC} At least four African countries will run out of specialised life-saving food for severely malnourished children in the next three months due to shortages caused by aid cuts, Save the Children said on Thursday.

Supplies were getting dangerously low in Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia and South Sudan of high-energy biscuits, peanut-based Plumpy’Nut paste and other treatments known as Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), the British-based aid group said.

“At a time when global hunger is sky-rocketing, the funding that could save children’s lives has been cut because of recent aid cuts,” Yvonne Arunga, the charity’s regional director for East and Southern Africa, said.

Save the Children did not name specific donors or funding reductions in its statement. Under President Donald Trump, the U.S. has slashed humanitarian assistance this year, and other Western powers have also been cutting funding as part of longer-term reductions.

Trump has said cuts to humanitarian aid are needed to ensure that grants align with his “America First” agenda and that other countries shoulder more of the burden.

Some clinics in the four African countries were turning to less-effective treatments for malnourished children, Save the Children said.

In Kenya, where an estimated 2.8 million people are estimated to have experienced high levels of acute food insecurity during this year’s March-to-May rainy season, stocks are expected to run out in October, it added.

The statement said RUTF supplies in Nigeria, Somalia and South Sudan would run out within three months.

Government officials from the four countries did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Globally, funding cuts are expected to cut off nutrition treatment this year to 15.6 million people across 18 countries, including 2.3 million severely malnourished children, Save the Children said.

Cuts by the Trump administration left 60,000 to 66,000 metric tons of food, including 1,100 tons of fortified biscuits, stranded in warehouses for months earlier this year, Reuters reported in May.

The U.S. government later agreed to hand over 600 tons of the biscuits to the U.N. World Food Programme but said it would have to destroy nearly 500 tons which expired last month.

Earlier this month, the U.S. State Department announced it would provide $93 million for RUTF supplies to treat more than 800,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition in 13 countries, including Nigeria, Sudan, Kenya and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Somali opposition bloc condemns arrest of prominent elder in Mogadishu

friday  29 Aug 2025 {HMC} The Somali Salvation Council, an alliance of opposition figures led by former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, has on Thursday condemned the arrest of a prominent clan elder in Mogadishu, calling the move unconstitutional and politically motivated.

Police detained Hussein Mohamed Mahmoud Haadoole earlier this week, accusing him of disturbing security and insulting government leaders. Haadoole is the elder brother of federal lawmaker Osman Haadoole.

The council labeled the arrest illegal, alleging that security forces abducted Haadoole from his home after he criticized what they described as the “auctioning of public land” by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration.

“Freedom of speech is a constitutional right and a foundation of the state system,” the statement said, adding that the elder had peacefully expressed his views on the alleged abuse of power and state property.

The group warned that detention was part of a wider attempt to silence dissent and intimidate citizens advocating for their constitutional rights. It called on Somalis to stand united in defending their property and rights.

Government officials have not commented on the council’s allegations.
