A vehicle rammed into a crowd of people waiting to enter a performance venue along a busy boulevard in Los Angeles early Saturday, injuring 30 people and leading bystanders to attack the driver, authorities said.

The driver was later found to have been shot, according to police, who were searching for a suspected gunman who fled the scene along Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood.

It was not immediately clear if the driver was shot before or after the crash or why he drove into the crowd, a police spokesperson said.

Twenty-three victims were taken to hospitals and trauma centers, according to police. Seven were in critical condition, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement.

Fire Capt. Adam VanGerpen said a line of people — mostly female — were waiting to enter Vermont Hollywood when they were struck by a Nissan Versa that also hit a food vending cart and valet stand. “This was a very chaotic scene,” said VanGerpen, a public information officer.

People inside came out to help victims in the minutes before emergency crews arrived, he said.

The driver, whose gunshot wound was found by paramedics, was also taken to a hospital. Police did not identify him or disclose his condition.

The person suspected of shooting him was described as a man in a blue jersey with a silver revolver.

“This is under police investigation,” VanGerpen said. “This will be a large investigation with the LAPD.”

Vermont Hollywood was hosting a reggae-hip hop event from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., according to its online calendar. There was no immediate response to a phone message left with the business.

A fight broke out outside the venue beforehand, according to Maria Medrano, who with her husband was there selling hot dogs. Shortly afterward, she said, the car hit the people, and the couple narrowly escaped when it crushed their stand.

“The car stopped once it hit the hot dog stand, it got stuck there,” Medrano told The Associated Press from the hospital. “If not, I wouldn’t be here to tell” the story.
After the crash she heard what sounded like gunshots.

“Everyone started running,” Medrano said.

Monday 21,July 2025 {HMC}  Somali national army troops, backed by allied clan militias, have killed more than 15 al-Shabaab fighters, including key operatives, in recent military operations across four regions: Galgaduud, Lower Shabelle, Lower Juba, and Middle Shabelle.

The spokesperson for Somalia’s Ministry of Defense, Abukar Macalin, said on Sunday that several leaders of the militant group were among those killed, including a senior figure identified as Ibrahim Abdirahman Sanbuur. Sanbuur was killed in the Harboole area of the Lower Juba region.

“In the latest offensives, the national forces, in coordination with local fighters, inflicted significant casualties on the Khawarij,” said Macalin, using a term commonly used by the government to refer to al-Shabaab. “An operation in the Xiingaduud area—located between Amara and Qodqod—resulted in the deaths of 11 Khawarij militants. The operation was successfully executed as planned.”
He added that additional militants were killed in the Mido and Harboole areas of Lower Juba. Among them was Sanbuur, a longtime member of the group believed to have joined al-Shabaab in 2010.

Macalin commended the ongoing cooperation between Somali security forces and local communities, praising their shared efforts in dismantling al-Shabaab’s influence in parts of the country.

“These achievements reflect the strong partnership between our forces and the people. Together, they continue to weaken the Khawarij in every region they operate,” he said.

The Somali government has stepped up military operations targeting al-Shabaab strongholds in central and southern Somalia as part of a broader campaign to restore stability and reclaim territory.

Monday 21,July 2025 {HMC} At least three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers were killed and seven others injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack on Tuesday, July 15, in the Badaah area along the Kiunga-Sankuri road in Lamu County.

Lamu East Deputy County Commissioner George Kubai confirmed the incident, saying the soldiers were returning from Sankuri after a transport mission when their vehicle struck an IED near Kiunga.

The injured soldiers were taken to a local hospital in Kiunga for treatment, according to preliminary reports.
Security officials have launched an operation to track down those responsible for planting the explosive device. Local residents have warned that the area continues to face an active threat from terrorist elements.

As of the time of publication, the KDF had not released an official statement regarding the attack.

Earlier in the week, KDF personnel deployed under Operation Amani Boni (OAB) held a Key Leader Engagement (KLE) with community elders in Kiunga. The meeting, led by Officer Commanding Major Averestus Achachi, included representatives from the Waboni, Bajuni, and Somali communities.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Ministry of Defence said the engagement was a significant step in enhancing collaboration between security forces and local residents. The meeting also reaffirmed the mandate of the OAB troops and their mission to restore and maintain peace across the greater Kiunga region.

Monday 21,July 2025 {HMC} who oversaw the city during the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots — has lost the backing of the Dem party to a Somali-American socialist following a contested vote by party members.

Omar Fateh, 35, a Minnesota state Senator, won the endorsement of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party for Minneapolis mayor over Jacob Frey, who has been in office since 2018.

Fateh (MN-62), who is the first Somali American and Muslim to serve in the Minnesota state Senate, received more than 60% of the vote from delegates at the Minneapolis DFL convention late Saturday — despite complaints from the Frey campaign over the election process.

Issues with electronic balloting at the convention saw paper ballots brought in, while the final vote was taken via a show of raised badges, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Frey’s supporters left the Target Center arena in protest in an attempt to deny the convention a quorum.

“This election should be decided by the entire city rather than the small group of people who became delegates, particularly in light of the extremely flawed and irregular conduct of this convention,” Frey’s campaign manager Sam Schulenberg said.

“Voters will now have a clear choice between the records and leadership of Sen. Fateh and Mayor Frey. We look forward to taking our vision to the voters in November,” he said.

Frey, who was elected mayor in 2017 and reelected in 2021, was in charge of Minneapolis while the city burned during 2020’s BLM riots in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of a white police officer in the city.

Despite Frey’s sops to the left on police reform, his words and actions didn’t go far enough for many progressives in the city.

In 2020, Frey was booed and heckled at a demonstration after saying he didn’t support defunding the Minneapolis Police Department.

Fateh, a Democratic Socialist, ran on a campaign similar to that of New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, calling for rent stabilization, more affordable housing, and higher taxes on the wealthy.

“I am incredibly honored to be the DFL endorsed candidate for Minneapolis Mayor,” he said on X following his victory.. This endorsement is a message that Minneapolis residents are done with broken promises, vetoes, and politics as usual. It’s a mandate to build a city that works for all of us.

“November 4 is around the corner. Join our coalition of voters who share our vision for a Minneapolis where housing is a human right, public safety means sending the right responders, and city government stands for working people, not corporate donors,” he added.
