Friday 30 May 2025{HMC} The Republic of Somaliland’s Mission office was opened in Nairobi on Thursday, May 29, during a ceremony presided over by the de facto state’s president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro).

The event was attended by senior Kenyan government officials and members of the international community, including those from Somaliland.

Among Kenyan leaders who attended the event were Uasin Gishu Governor, Jonathan Bii, and Marsabit Senator Mohamed Said Chute.

Somaliland’s Mission in Nairobi serves as Somaliland’s representation office in Kenya, with its key roles including trade and investment, consular services, political engagement, and community support.

The inauguration comes barely two days after the Kenyan government halted the planned opening of the Somaliland Liaison Office, citing its recognition of the Federal Government of Somalia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a directive stating that the Liaison Office could not be upgraded to a diplomatic mission, reinforcing its commitment to Somalia’s territorial integrity.

“The Ministry further notes with concern that to the extent the event of May 27 has not been approved by this Ministry, its investiture of the status of a Diplomatic Office does not enjoy the imprimatur of the Republic of Kenya and cannot be allowed to proceed,” a statement issued on Monday evening read in part.

Despite this setback, Somaliland proceeded with the launch of the Mission office. The Liason Office was to be launched on Tuesday, May 27.

Leaders and Somaliland stakeholders have praised the inauguration, terming it a significant milestone in the nation’s diplomatic presence in East Africa.

However, the development might have implications for Kenya, which reaffirmed its recognition of the Federal Government of Somalia as the sole legitimate authority over Somali territories, including Somaliland.

Somalia may view this move as Kenya undermining its sovereignty, potentially straining bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, Somaliland, being a key trading partner for Kenya, especially in the livestock and miraa sector, the mission could facilitate business agreements, boosting trade between Kenya and Somaliland.
