Senior police officer killed in Dhuusamareeb in apparent love triangle

Tuesday 24, Dec 2024 {HMC}  A senior police officer was shot and killed Monday night in Dhuusamareeb, the capital of Somalia’s Galmudug state, in what investigators describe as a crime of passion. Authorities have arrested a suspect believed to be responsible for the killing, which has sent shockwaves through the community.

Second Lieutenant Hassan Abdi Mohamed, widely known as Hassan Quuri, was ambushed near Dhuusamareeb General Hospital while seated in his car. His vehicle was riddled with bullets, leaving him dead at the scene. A woman who was with him at the time suffered minor injuries from the gunfire.

Preliminary investigations suggest the killing may have stemmed from a romantic dispute. Local sources indicate the suspected assailant, now in custody, harboured feelings for the woman accompanying the officer at the time of the attack.

Galmudug security forces acted swiftly, apprehending a suspect identified as a member of the Somali National Army. Police in Dhuusamareeb confirmed that the individual is under interrogation. “We are thoroughly investigating the incident and will provide updates as soon as new information becomes available,” a police spokesperson said.

Hassan Quuri, a seasoned officer who previously served as deputy commander of police stations in Guriceel and Dhuusamareeb, was known for his commitment to maintaining order in a region often plagued by instability. His death underscores the persistent risks faced by law enforcement officers in Somalia, where targeted attacks remain a grim reality.

The murder has reignited concerns about the intersection of personal grievances and violence within Somali communities, particularly in areas where security personnel are both protectors and participants in local disputes.

Residents of Dhuusamareeb have called for swift justice and stronger safeguards to prevent similar tragedies. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the killing.

Further updates will be provided as authorities release additional details.

Somalia and Ethiopia discuss Ankara summit agreements as tensions rise

Tuesday 24, Dec 2024 {HMC}  Ethiopia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Misganu Arga, hosted Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ali Mohamed Omar, for high-level discussions to advance agreements reached during the Ankara Summit on December 11. The talks in Ethiopia’s capital focused on deepening bilateral ties and translating summit commitments into actionable steps.

The two ministers reviewed key provisions of the Ankara agreements facilitated by Turkey and explored ways to strengthen diplomatic and economic cooperation. Ethiopian media reports emphasized the importance of fostering closer collaboration to enhance regional stability and prosperity in the Horn of Africa.

Ambassador Arga highlighted Ethiopia’s commitment to advancing peace and security through strengthened diplomatic relations. Both officials expressed a shared determination to fortify ties between their nations, underscoring the mutual benefits of closer cooperation.

The discussions come at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries. Somalia’s federal government recently accused Ethiopian troops operating under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) of launching an unprovoked attack in the Doolow district of the Gedo region. The clash reportedly targeted Somali military positions, resulting in casualties among Somali forces.

The allegations have sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with many Somalis voicing anger over what they perceive as a violation of national sovereignty. Meanwhile, the Somali government continues its efforts to implement the Ankara agreements, seeking to balance diplomacy with addressing domestic concerns over Ethiopian military actions.

The Ankara Summit marked a major milestone in Somali-Ethiopian relations, with leaders from both countries pledging to enhance cooperation in security, trade, and development. Turkey, acting as a mediator, has played a key role in facilitating these agreements, which are seen as a blueprint for greater collaboration in a region often marred by instability.

Somalia, Ethiopia forces in deadly clash days after deal

Tuesday 24, Dec 2024 {HMC} Somalia accused Ethiopian forces of a deadly attack on its troops in a border region on Monday, just days after the two countries signed an accord aimed at resolving months of tension.

The Somali foreign ministry said in a statement that Ethiopian troops had attacked its forces stationed at an airstrip in the border town of Doolow in Somalia’s Jubaland state around 10:00 am.

It said the attack targeted three bases manned by the army, police and National Intelligence and Security Agency, and had caused fatalities, without giving a precise number.

But Jubaland state officials said the Ethiopian troops, who are also based at the airstrip as part of its mission against Islamist insurgents, had intervened to protect a group of local politicians.

Somalia’s federal government has been clashing in recent weeks with forces of the semi-autonomous Jubaland over control of key areas in the state.

“The incident started this morning after the (federal) forces who were stationed here were given instructions to shoot an aircraft carrying a Jubaland state delegation… including state legislators, cabinet members and the governor,” Jubaland security minister Yusuf Hussein Osman said at a press conference in Doolow.

He said a firefight ensued in the town until Somali federal forces were “disarmed and some of them wounded”.

“The pro-Jubaland forces and the Somali government security forces clashed and the Ethiopian forces who are stationed within the airstrip area intervened in support of the pro-Jubaland forces,” a local resident, Mohamed Hassan, told AFP by phone.

“The pro-Somali government forces were later overpowered after the fighting spread in other areas inside town,” he added.

Somalia is a federation of semi-autonomous member states — Puntland, Jubaland, Galmudug, Hirshabelle and South West — that have often clashed with the central government in Mogadishu.

Deal threatened

The incident threatens to upend a deal brokered by Turkey less than two weeks ago to end a nearly year-long dispute between Somalia and Ethiopia.

That dispute began in January when Ethiopia signed an agreement with another breakaway region of Somalia — Somaliland — to lease a stretch of coastline for a port and military base in exchange for recognition, although this was never confirmed by Addis Ababa.

Somalia viewed this as a breach of its sovereignty, sparking a fierce diplomatic and military row.

That appeared to be resolved when Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met in Ankara on December 12 and signed a deal that is expected to offer land-locked Ethiopia an alternative sea access in Somalia.

However, Somalia’s foreign ministry said the agreement was undermined by Monday’s incident in Doolow.

“Regrettably, these actions by Ethiopia constitute a blatant violation of the Ankara Declaration,” it said in the statement.

“The Somali Federal Government warns that it will not remain silent in the face of such clear violations of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity
