Israeli strike on northern Gaza’s Jabalia refugee camp kills 22

12-10-2024 (HMC) At least 22 people, including women and children, have been killed in an Israeli attack on the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza as Israeli forces press on with their ground assault in the area.

As the death toll mounted on Saturday, the Israeli military issued evacuation orders for northern Gaza with instructions for residents near Jabalia to evacuate to the south of the enclave.

The Israel military launched a deadly offensive in the Jabalia area a week ago which it claims is aimed at stopping Palestinian group Hamas from regrouping. The attacks have trapped thousands of Palestinian civilians, international charity Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, said.

Hamas on Saturday slammed the Israeli army and said its “massacres are a continuation of the ongoing criminal genocide against our people, shielded by American support”.

The attack that wounded more than 90 people was an attempt to “punish the population for their resilience and rejection of displacement”, the group said in a statement.

At least 30 people were injured, and 14 people remain missing and are believed to be buried under the rubble, according to Wafa.

Reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud said that “powerful explosions were heard in the northern part of the Gaza Strip”, adding that many of the casualties were “arriving at the hospital either in pieces or soaked in blood”.

The Kamal Adwan Hospital in the north was perilously close to running out of fuel and staff said Israeli soldiers had ordered them to leave.

Reporting from the facility, Al Jazeera’s Moath al-Kahlout described the weeklong siege as “suffocating”.

River guardians risk own lives as they work to protect, restore Colombia’s Atrato

0

12-10-2024 (HMC) – Sediment and pebbles are all that’s left on the earth around much of Bernardino Mosquera’s small riverside community in northwest Colombia’s Choco region.

Just a year ago, healthy shrubs and trees filled this important biodiversity spot teeming with species native to the land. But then illegal miners arrived, using their heavy machinery to dredge the riverbeds for gold.

“It’s just desert here,” said Mosquera. “Illegal mining affects the ecosystem in every way … it leads to degraded land. There are no trees. The water sources are drying up, it’s polluted by mercury.”

Mosquera is a river guardian, a title bestowed upon him and 13 others. The unpaid guardians serve as the eyes and ears of the Atrato River: They liaise with government institutions on environmental and social issues in the face of aggression from armed groups and hope to reverse the devastation they see along the river. But after eight years, they are increasingly disenchanted by the lack of support from institutions and growing threats from armed groups that control the region.

Colombia’s constitutional court declared in 2016 that the Atrato River running alongside this 2,500-person town was so important to life, it would have rights equivalent to a human. The region is home to thousands of species, with 25% of its plant and bird species endemic, according to the United Nations Development Programme. The river’s legal status was a first for Latin America, and when the guardians were established.

“It’s an unbreakable marriage between its inhabitants and the rivers,” Mosquera, 62, said. “That’s why we have to defend the Atrato.”

Illegal gold mining has become the fastest-growing criminal economy over the past decade in South America. The boom began in Colombia and Peru and expanded to Ecuador, Venezuela and Brazil.

Illegal mining rife in Choco

Paimado, like many towns in the Choco region, is an illegal mining hub firmly in the control of the largest criminal organization in the country, known as Gulf Clan. Early each morning, small wooden boats carry plastic gasoline containers to feed the mining machinery dotted along the Atrato, a river that snakes some 750 kilometers (470 miles) through northern Colombian jungles.

Dozens of illegal mines pepper the river between Mosquera’s home in Paimado — which lies on Rio Quito, the Atrato River’s main tributary — and the state capital Quibdo.

Large wooden rafts propped on stilts reach deep into the riverbed to extract material that is sifted through the machine for gold. Deep inside the banks of the river, another type of mining takes place with heavier machinery. It is here that deforestation is glaringly evident.

Drone footage taken by The Associated Press shows large patches of empty land that stretch long behind the riverbanks.

“Many people think that because it looks very green there is no deforestation,” said river guardian and agronomist Maryuri Mosquera, 42.

High rates of poverty have pushed many into gold mining, work that destroys land and contaminates their river. That destruction then destroys the local economy, making communities even more dependent on mining.

Colombia’s human rights ombudsman’s office said in April the government is failing to protect the river, saying “there is no evidence of any progress” since the river gained personhood. It called on the environment ministry to comply with the 2016 ruling.

In a written response, Colombia’s environment ministry said its Minister Susana Muhamad has been coordinating efforts with the Ministry of Defense “to protect this important ecosystem.” It added that a program will soon begin to work with the communities to restore the Atrato River basin and its tributaries.

Community lifeline destroyed

The Atrato River has long been an important source of water, food and transport for its rural, mostly Afro-Colombian residents who built communities on the riverbanks.

The tiny village of El Arenal along the Atrato is home to river guardian Juan Carlos Palacios, 33, who said that his role is a triumph for the Black communities who fought for the 2016 ruling.

“It makes me feel very sad when I see machinery pass by continually, without any controls. They arrive on our land and we can’t even say anything, because the miners come along with armed actors,” Palacios said.

For most of his life — even sometimes now — Palacios has been involved in artisanal gold mining. A short canoe ride to the other side of the river from El Arenal is his mother, bent over with a hoe and a wooden gold sifting pan. This has been her life since she can remember.

Hezbollah fires at Israel as wars rage on Yom Kippur

0

12-10-2024 (HMC) – Hezbollah said it launched a salvo of missiles at an Israeli military base on Saturday, as Israeli troops battled militants in Lebanon and Gaza on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Cities around Israel were quiet with markets closed, flights stopped and public transport halted as observant Jews fasted and prayed on the Day of Atonement.

But with the country at war against Hezbollah and Hamas, troops remained engaged in combat on the northern and southern frontiers amid a firestorm of criticism over the wounding of four U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon.

Hezbollah, which has lost its leader and a long list of key commanders to Israeli strikes since the start of the war in Lebanon, on Saturday said it struck an army base with missiles to the south of the city of Haifa.

Hezbollah fighters were “targeting the explosives factory there with a salvo of … missiles,” the group said in a statement.

Air raid sirens sounded Saturday in northern Israel, with the Israeli military saying it had intercepted a projectile launched from Lebanon.

In the hours ahead of Yom Kippur, Israel faced severe diplomatic backlash over what it said was a “hit” on a United Nations peacekeeping position in Lebanon.

Two Sri Lankan peacekeepers were hurt in the second such incident in two days, the UNIFIL mission said Friday.

The military said Israeli soldiers had responded with fire to “an immediate threat” around 50 meters from the UNIFIL post.

As Israel faced a chorus of condemnation by U.N. chief Antonio Guterres, Western allies and others, the military pledged to carry out a “thorough review.”

‘Deliberately targeted’

UNIFIL peacekeepers in Lebanon have found themselves on the frontline of the Israel-Hezbollah war, which has killed more than 1,200 people in Lebanon since September 23, according to an AFP tally of Lebanese health ministry figures.

Four peacekeepers have been injured including two Indonesians who were hurt on Thursday when an Israeli tank shot at their watchtower, according to UNIFIL.

Sean Clancy, the Irish military’s chief of staff, said he did not believe Israel’s explanation of Friday’s incident.

Ethiopian forces launch mortar attacks after al-Shabaab assault in Wajid district.

0

12-10-2024 (HMC) –  Ethiopian troops launched mortar attacks across Wajid district in Somalia’s Bakool region following an al-Shabaab militant assault on their military base Friday night, local residents reported.

The confrontation led to intense fighting between Ethiopian forces and al-Shabaab militants, with both sides employing heavy weaponry. Ethiopian troops responded with significant bombardments after the initial attack, according to witnesses.

Details about the number of casualties remain unclear, as local authorities have not yet provided an official statement.

Ethiopian forces intensified operations in the Wajid district on Saturday, continuing their efforts to stabilize the region following the assault.

Al-Shabaab, in a brief statement, claimed responsibility for the attack, asserting that they had killed Ethiopian soldiers and looted weapons and military equipment. The group, however, did not specify the number of casualties or the scale of the equipment seized.

The situation remains tense as Ethiopian forces continue their operations in the area.

Hirshabelle State condemns clashes in Beledweyne town, vows to uphold rule of law

12-10-2024 (HMC) – The Hirshabelle administration’s Hiiraan region on Friday condemned the clash between forces from the Hiiraan State administration and Hirshabelle State administration in Beledweyne, which killed one civilian and heightened instability.

In a statement, the administration vowed to take necessary measures to maintain law and order and protect the safety of residents.

“The Hiiraan region administration is committed to safeguarding the rule of law and security. It is unacceptable for anyone to disrupt the peace in Beledweyne, as such actions could involve terrorist groups,” the statement read.

The administration emphasized that responsibility for any anti-security actions will rest with those instigating unrest, adding that it will not tolerate groups acting against the security of the people.

The fighting erupted at Lamagalay camp, the headquarters of the Hiiraan region, as Hirshabelle forces reportedly attempted to disrupt the first anniversary celebrations of the Hiiraan State administration, scheduled for Saturday, according to Hiiraan officials.
Tensions have been high since Hiiraan Governor Ali Jeyte Osman declared Hiiraan independent from Hirshabelle State following his dismissal by Hirshabelle State President Ali Abdullahi Hussein in June 2023.
