Six Kenyans have been killed in Dhobley, Somalia by suspected Al Shabaab militants, Liboi Deputy County Commissioner Ali Manduku has confirmed.

Mr Manduku said the six are from the Meru region in Kenya and have been hawking plastic utensils in Dhobley Town.

“The bodies will be brought to Liboi this evening for identification. They have been doing business in Dhobley for a long time.

“We are yet to know why they were killed,” Mr Manduku said by phone.

Mr Manduku could not explain how the six found their way into Dhobley despite a closed border between Kenya and Somalia.

Kenya announced the closure of her border with Somalia in 2011.

Despite the closure, residents of both countries have continued to interact and crisscross the border engaging in business deals.

Somalia hosts over 38,600 refugees, asylum-seekers: UNHCR

MOGADISHU (Xinhua) — The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Thursday that Somalia is hosting 38,642 registered refugees and asylum-seekers as of February.

About 67 percent of them are women and children, 30 percent are school-age children (6-17 years), and 26 percent are women and girls of reproductive age (13-49 years), the UNHCR said in its latest update released in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.

“The majority of refugees and asylum-seekers, or 66 percent, are from Ethiopia, followed by Yemen (29 percent), Syria (4 percent), and other countries (1 percent),” it said.

According to the UNHCR, most of the refugees and asylum-seekers reside in urban or peri-urban settings across the Woqooyi Galbeed and Bari regions in northern Somalia.

It said 9,046 former refugees have returned to Somalia from their countries of asylum, mostly from Yemen, followed by Kenya, since January 2020.

“From the total number of refugee returnees, 3,652 individuals have been directly assisted by UNHCR, mainly through the voluntary repatriation program from Kenya and the assisted spontaneous returns program from Yemen,” the UNHCR said.

The UN agency said 68 Somali refugees have returned to Somalia in 2024.

It added that more than 800,000 Somali refugees and asylum-seekers are also hosted in neighboring countries and a further 3.9 million persons are internally displaced inside Somalia due to conflict and natural disasters.

Somali market partners with food bank to provide hundreds of free meals a day

A partnership between a local Somali market and a regional food bank is providing 2,000 free meals a week in Faribault during Ramadan. The owner of the local Somali market opted to pay for and serve another 1,500 meals on top of that, bringing the weekly total to 3,500 meals served to the community.

Madina Cuisine & Market, a Somali market and eatery in downtown Faribault, has teamed up with Channel One Regional Food Bank to serve the meals to community members gathering at the mosque for sundown prayer, after which Muslims break their daytime fast.

The partnership is part of the Kitchen Coalition. It was started by Second Harvest during the pandemic, according to Channel One Food Development Manager Genna Devitt. Channel One joined in November of 2021. Second Harvest Northern Lakes in Duluth also joined later.

“We found that people of color and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) communities face hunger, food insecurity, at a much higher rate than other communities,” Devitt said. “So, we always try to support those in need, wherever the most need is, and match them up with culturally connected meals. They can get meals that are specifically made for them.”

The meals come from “partner kitchens,” which range from a comfort-food restaurant in Rochester to a Mexican restaurant in Austin. Almost 100 nonprofits across the state serve as distribution partners.

According to the program’s webpage, 25,000 meals are served for free throughout the state every week. To date, the webpage says the program has provided communities with more than 5 million meals, made for and by local communities.

When Channel One joined in on the program, one of the nonprofits it established as a distribution partner was Somali Community Resettlement Services in Faribault. That nonprofit suggested Medina as a partner kitchen. The market’s owner, Mahad Abdulle, agreed, joining the program in 2022.

“Mahad has been a great partner to work with,” Devitt said. “He is obviously so connected to the community that he’s serving. So I think that is something that is really beneficial, when the restaurant has that personal connection to the community. I think that means a lot to both groups.”

However, the vast majority of the Somali community is in the midst of Ramadan, the monthlong holiday when Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from sunup to sundown for 30 days straight. So, lunch is served a little later than usual this month.

The food is taken to the Abubakar As-Saddique Islamic Center, the local mosque, where many Faribault Muslims gather for sundown prayer. After the prayer, the community feasts on sambusas and other culturally specific foods provided by Madina.

Supper time isn’t the only part of the operation that is slightly different during Ramadan.

Praise through service

Channel One and the other coordinating organizations fund the program with donations from businesses and private citizens. Not only do they provide some ingredients for the restaurant-style meals, but they also pay the labor and overhead costs to prepare 500 meals served at the restaurant on Thursdays and Fridays.

During Ramadan, the coalition pays for four days a week. Abdulle decided to step up to provide 500 free meals seven days a week.

“We start early,” Abdulle said. “In the morning, we cook for the restaurant. Afternoon, we cook for the Somali community. … I know Ramadan is very hard. It’s very difficult, especially for my cooks. They cook all day but can’t eat.”

For the extra three days, his business makes the meals and provides them to the community on his own dime.

“That’s what we believe,” Abdulle said. “God helps you if you donate (to the community).”

Devitt said she’s not surprised by Abdulle’s generosity.

“Mahad, he’s always very willing to do extra for his community,” she said. “And he wants to do it. But I know it is so much to take on, so I think it’s great that he’s doing that.”

When Somaliland tries to discredit Somalia’s ATC

The Aviation Herald
Friday March 29, 2024

An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-8 MAX, registration ET-AWH performing flight ET-690 from Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) to Bangalore (India), was enroute at FL370 over Somaliland in contact with Somalia’s ATC.

An Emirates Airlines Boeing 777-300, registration A6-EGN performing flight EK-722 from Nairobi (Kenya) to Dubai (United Arab Emirates), was enroute at FL370 over Somaliland, the two aircraft were on converging trajectories.

According to Somaliland’s Civil Aviation And Airport Authority a “harrowing” occurrence of a possible near collision was averted by the quick reaction of Somaliland’s ATC Controllers (see their report below).

However, ADS-B data transmitted by the aircraft tell another story:

Both aircraft were at FL370 on converging trajectories over Somaliland, both in contact with Somalia’s Air Traffic Control, when ET-690 began their step climb to FL390. At that point the aircraft’s lateral distance was over 30nm. When ET-690 climbed through FL380 the aircraft were still 20nm apart. ET-690 was about 30nm before the crossing point when they began the climb, EK-722 was about 40nm ahead of the crossing point. When ET-690 crossed over the flight track of EK-722 already at FL390, EK-722 was still 10nm ahead of the crossing point. At no point in time separation minima were violated.

Consequently, Emirates Airlines “robustly” denied that such an occurrence as described by Somaliland’s CAA has ever occurred.

Both aircraft continued to their destinations for safe landings.

Somaliland and Somalia struggle over who is in control of the airspace. In 2019 ICAO had assigned the control of entire Airspace of Somalia to Somalia’s government in Mogadishu stating:

As you might be following up, the management of the airspace of Somalia had been transferred from ICAO-FISS Project-SOM14802 to the Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) of the Federal Government of Somalia with effect from 1st AUG 2019. Thereafter, Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) has been responsible for the provision of Air Navigation Services in the entire airspace of Somalia including Aeronautical Information Service/Management.

Somaliland, officially the Republic of Somaliland, is an internationally unrecognized state internationally deemed to be part of Somalia.

There have been reports of “invalid transmissions” on ATC frequencies over Northern Somalia (Somaliland) in the recent month, where (“hostile”) voices other than the ATC controllers were attempting to provide instructions to aircraft, for example see: Incident: El Al B789 over Somalia on Feb 17th 2024, invalid communication on ATC frequency.

In essence, the statement by Somaliland’s CAA such confirms, that Mogadishu (Somalia) ATC was in control of the aircraft and claims, that Somaliland controllers invalidly transmitted on that frequency providing instructions to an aircraft.

This conflict between Somaliland and Somalia endangers international air traffic over Somalia, in particular over Somaliland and the Gulf of Aden.

Madaxweynaha Turkey oo bisha May booqanaya Aqalka Cad ee Mareykanka

Jimco-29-March-2024 {HMC} WASHINGTON — Madaxweynaha Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan ayaa booqan doona Mareykanka 9-ka May, waxaa sidaas maanta sheegay sarkaal Turkish ah, taasi oo dhabbaha u xaareysa kulankii ugu horreeyey ee uu ku yeesho Aqalka Cad ee xilliga maamulka Biden.

Booqashada Washington ayaa noqonaysa tii ugu horreysay ee Erdogan tan iyo sannadkii 2019-kii markaasi oo uu la kulmay madaxweynihii xilligaas ee Donald Trump, oo ay lahaayeen xiriir wanaagsan.

Tan iyo doorashadii madaxweyne Joe Biden ee 2020, Ankara waxay raadineysay kulan kale oo fool ka fool ah.

Xiriirka labadan dal ee ka wada tirsan xulafada NATO, oo in muddo ah isku khilaafsanaa arrimo kala duwan, ayaa soo hagaagayey tan iyo markii Ankara ay bishii Janaayo ogolaatay xubinnimada Sweden ee NATO, kadib 20 bil oo dib u dhac ah oo niyad jab ku keenay Washington.

Khamiistii iyo Jimcihii, Wasiirka Arrimaha Dibadda Turkiga Hakan Fidan iyo Wasiirka Difaaca Yasar Guler ayaa sidoo kale la kulmay wafdi Mareykan ah.

Ma jiro wax war ah oo ka soo baxay Washington ama safaaradda Mareykanka ee Ankara oo ku saabsan booqashada Erdogan.

Falanqeeyayaasha ayaa sheegay in Biden iyo Erdogan ay sidoo kale u badan tahay inay ka wadahadli doonaan dagaalka Israel iyo Xamaas – iyadoo ay jiraan hadallo kulul oo Erdogan uu ku dhaleeceeyey ficillada Israel.

Biden iyo Erdogan ayaa sidoo kale ka wada-hadli doona iskaashiga difaaca labada dal oo ay ku jirto ansixinta dhowaan Turkiga loogu ogolaaday iibsashada diyaaradaha dagaalka Mareykanka ee F-16.
