Puntland court deports Iranian fishermen for illegal fishing off Bari coast

Sunday 19 Oct 2025 {HMC}  A Puntland court has fined and deported 15 Iranian fishermen after convicting them of illegally fishing in Somali waters off the Bari coast, regional authorities announced Sunday.

The court ordered each fisherman to pay a $500 fine before being repatriated to Iran. The men were apprehended during a joint maritime operation by Puntland security forces targeting unauthorized foreign vessels operating in Somali territorial waters.

Two Iranian nationals died during the operation after attempting to flee from law enforcement, the court ruled. It determined that no compensation would be pursued, finding the men perished while resisting arrest.

Two Somali nationals who worked with the Iranian crew received three-year prison terms and $2,000 fines, while another Somali suspect tried in absentia was sentenced to five years in prison and fined $5,000.

The vessel used in the operation was fined $70,000, and authorities were ordered to confiscate its illegal catch. Puntland’s maritime authorities said the ruling sends a message that illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing will not be tolerated in Somali waters.

Illegal fishing has become a persistent problem along Puntland’s 1,600-kilometer coastline, where local fishing communities say foreign vessels have depleted marine stocks.

Defense leaders visit liberated Awdheegle to assess security and humanitarian situation

Sunday 19 Oct 2025 {HMC}    Senior Somali defense officials visited Awdheegle on Sunday to assess the town’s security and humanitarian conditions following its liberation from As  fighters, marking a key step in the government’s ongoing stabilization campaign in southern Somalia.

Deputy Defense Minister Omar Ali Abdi and Somali National Army Chief General Odowaa Yusuf Raage led the delegation, which toured several areas heavily damaged during years of militant control. The inspection focused on homes, schools, health centers, and solar-powered energy systems that residents once relied on before the militants’ retreat.

Abdi said Awdheegle’s residents are facing severe humanitarian challenges that require both immediate relief and long-term reconstruction efforts.

“This visit underscores the government’s commitment to rebuild liberated areas and ensure Somali citizens can live in peace and dignity,” he said.

General Odowaa praised the Somali National Army’s persistence in the fight against AS -and acknowledged the support of international partners for their role in helping stabilize recaptured regions.

The Awdheegle visit follows a string of government-led offensives that have reclaimed key towns across Lower Shabelle. Officials say the next phase of operations will focus on consolidating gains, restoring governance, and preventing  AS from reestablishing its presence in liberated communities.

Somali traders in Cape Town close shops after wave of deadly gang violence

Sunday 19 Oct 2025 {HMC}  Somali-owned shops across several Cape Town townships remained closed for a fourth straight day on Sunday after a string of armed attacks killed three Somali nationals and left two others injured, community leaders said.

The violence, concentrated in the townships of Philippi, Nyanga, and Khayelitsha, has sparked fear among hundreds of Somali traders who operate small convenience stores in low-income neighborhoods. Witnesses said armed gangs raided and looted Somali-owned shops in recent days, prompting mass closures as traders fled for safety.

Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the killings or assaults, deepening frustration among Somali residents who accuse authorities of failing to protect foreign business owners. Community representatives met with police officials on Saturday to demand stronger patrols and swift investigations.

The three victims were buried the same afternoon at the Muslim cemetery in Mowbray, Cape Town. Two others remain hospitalized with gunshot and stab wounds, according to local community members.

South Africa has experienced periodic surges of violence against foreign nationals, particularly African migrants who dominate informal trade sectors. Somali traders, who fled conflict and poverty in search of stability, have frequently been targeted in xenophobic attacks that officials often attribute to economic tension and criminal opportunism.

“This is not the first time we have buried our people,” said one Somali shop owner in Khayelitsha. “We came here looking for peace, but every few months we face the same violence.
