Italy blow past Estonia 5-0 with late surge in Gattuso debut

Saturday September 6, 2025 {HMC} Italy opened Gennaro Gattuso’s reign with a 5-0 home win over Estonia in Friday’s World Cup qualifier, wasting chances for almost an hour before exploding in the final stages of the second half to turn dominance into a rout.

The spotlight was on new Italy manager Gattuso, with his side on the back foot in Group I after a 3-0 defeat at Norway in June that cost coach Luciano Spalletti his job.

Italy sit third in their group on six points from three games, with Norway leading on 12 and Israel second with nine, both having played a match more. Estonia are fourth with three points after five matches.

For the four-time World Cup winners Italy, the domestic pressure has been immense to secure a place at the upcoming tournament held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, after missing the last two editions.

“We showed great hunger, hard work and humility all week. We proved we’re still standing and want to fight for qualification,” double goalscorer Mateo Retegui told RAI Sport.

Italy controlled the first half and carved out several chances, but the opener proved elusive as Estonia goalkeeper Karl Hein brilliantly tipped Retegui’s header onto the crossbar just before the break in Italy’s biggest chance of the half.

The hosts maintained their dominance after the break, but Hein produced a series of reaction saves to frustrate Italy’s pursuit of a breakthrough.

SECOND-HALF SURGE

Two minutes before the hour mark, relief swept through the Gewiss Stadium as Moise Kean broke the deadlock for Italy, nodding home from close range after Retegui’s deft back-heel flick lobbed a cross perfectly into his path.

Retegui doubled the lead in the 69th minute with a precise finish that crept inside the post beyond Hein’s outstretched hand, before Giacomo Raspadori added a third a minute later with a diving header from a byline cross.

A minute from time, Retegui grabbed his second of the night with a close-range header, before Alessandro Bastoni added Italy’s fifth deep into stoppage time.

“We have to thank the players for the performance, because we were only lacking a goal in the first half,” Gattuso said.

With momentum on their side, Italy now turn to Monday’s decisive clash against Israel in Hungary, though Gattuso continues to urge calm as the qualification starts to heat up.

“Nothing can ever be taken for granted and they deserve credit for their attitude throughout. We have an objective, which is to make the people happy and give enthusiasm back to Italians,” Gattuso said.

AU envoy welcomes Egyptian troop deployment assessment team in Somalia

Saturday September 6, 2025 {HMC} The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia and Head of the AU Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), Ambassador El Hadji Ibrahima Diene, met with an Egyptian assessment team on Friday at the conclusion of its six-day visit to Somalia.

The team, led by Maj. Gen. Islam Aly Ibrahim Radwan, reviewed preparations for the deployment of Egyptian troops to AUSSOM as part of the African Union’s efforts to support Somalia during its ongoing political and security transition.

Ambassador Diene thanked Egypt for its commitment to peacekeeping operations, saying the deployment will strengthen AUSSOM’s capacity to stabilize and secure Somalia. He emphasized that the mission remains fully committed to facilitating the integration of the new contingent into AU operations.

Maj. Gen. Radwan, for his part, expressed appreciation for AUSSOM’s cooperation and reaffirmed Egypt’s readiness to play a prominent role in bolstering AU peace efforts in Somalia.

The assessment mission, which ran from Aug. 30 to Sept. 5, forms part of the AU’s broader strategy to enhance military cooperation with its member states.

Former Puntland football chief arrested amid leadership dispute

Saturday September 6, 2025 {HMC} Puntland security forces on Saturday arrested former chairman of the Puntland Football Association, Mohamed Ali Isse (known as Ciiro), at Garowe airport as he prepared to leave the city.

Authorities have not released an official statement, but local reports suggest Ciiro’s arrest is linked either to his refusal to hand over the association’s office to new leadership or to alleged ties with officials in Mogadishu.

His detention coincided with a Somali Football Federation (SFF) executive committee meeting in Mogadishu. The federation has rejected the recent election that replaced Ciiro with Abdihakin Hakiiki, continuing to recognize Ciiro as chairman.

Ciiro had accused Puntland’s Ministry of Youth and Sports of interfering in the election and backing Hakiiki. The dispute has since divided Puntland’s top football clubs, some of which have declared loyalty to rival factions.

The arrest marks the latest escalation in a leadership battle that has paralyzed football governance in Puntland.
