Man wanted for smuggling firearms extradited from Kenya to the US
Friday 26, Sep 2025 {HMC}An Ivorian national accused of conspiring to smuggle firearms into West Africa has been extradited from Kenya to the United States.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) confirmed that Bile Jean Philippe Assemian was handed over to U.S. authorities on September 25, 2025, following the conclusion of extradition proceedings in Nairobi.
Assemian was indicted by a Grand Jury in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Eastern Division, on May 28, 2025.
Court documents show that between October and November 2018, he and others allegedly purchased firearms in the U.S., mainly in Ohio and Maryland, intending to illegally export them to Côte d’Ivoire.
The U.S. government issued an INTERPOL Red Notice against him, prompting his arrest in Kenya.
On July 24, 2025, the ODPP, acting through the Central Authority in the Office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice, received a formal extradition request from Washington.
“On July 24, 2025, the DPP, through the Central Authority under the Office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice, received a formal request from the United States for Assemian’s arrest and extradition,” stated ODPP.
Proceedings began in Nairobi a day later, and on September 3, 2025, the Nairobi Chief Magistrate’s Court granted extradition orders, clearing the way for his transfer.

Speaking at the High-Level Pledging Conference for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), held on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly, Ethiopia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hadera Abera said Somalia’s long-term stability rests on strengthening its own security forces.
“We have made substantial gains in degrading al-Shabaab’s capabilities,” Abera said. “In this regard, we pay tribute to our troops, especially those that lost their life in the line of duty.”
He praised Mogadishu’s progress in bolstering the Somali National Army and police, but warned that international partners must urgently step up support. He called for swift implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2719, which lays out a framework for predictable financing of African-led peace operations.
AUSSOM, launched in January to replace the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), is tasked with consolidating security gains while handing greater responsibility to Somali forces. ATMIS itself succeeded the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which began in 2007 and played a pivotal role in counterterrorism operations against al-Shabaab.
The mission’s future, however, is clouded by funding disputes. Donors remain divided over who should shoulder the costs of African-led security operations. Critics warn that the hybrid funding model proposed by the United Nations and the African Union could lead to waste and inefficiency, while supporters argue it is essential to sustain fragile gains in the Horn of Africa.
Somalia, where al-Shabaab still controls large swathes of territory and regularly carries out deadly attacks, remains a test case for whether the international community can craft durable solutions to long-running conflicts on the continent.

UK announces a further £6 million funding to SSF Trust Fund to boost Somalia’s security

“We want to see this latest support improving the capacity of Somali forces on the ground, helping them make progress against Al Shabaab. The non-lethal logistical support provided by UNSOS is ensuring that soldiers on the frontline receive vital items, equipment and emergency medical services which are crucial in boosting their morale and ensuring efficient operations,” said Ambassador King.
Somalia’s National Security Advisor, Awes Hagi Yusuf Ahmed, welcomed the new funding noting the impact of the fund to Somalia’s improved security situation. He urged other donors and international partners to support the fund, pledging the government’s commitment to ensure transparency in utilization of the funds.
“We want to assure both the Somali people and the UK that the supported provided will be used effectively and transparently. As a government, we are accountable, not only to the Somali citizens, but also to the UK taxpayers because they want to know how their contributions are impacting the security situation in Somalia,” said the National Security Advisor.
“We are committed to full transparency and accountability to all-whether they are Somali’s or UK citizens providing us with support.”
The Officer-in-Charge Head of UNSOS, Qurat-Ul-Ain Sadozai, noted that the support provided by the UK is essential and core to the sustenance of the SSF Trust Fund, and Somali security forces on the frontline.
“I want to recognize the partnership with the UK and express our gratitude for their support. We also commend and acknowledge the bravery of the Somali Security Forces (SSF) working jointly with African Union (AU) troops in ensuring that Somalia remains safe. UNSOS commits to continue providing the necessary support required for efficient operations,” noted Ms. Sadozai.
The latest tranche builds on the UK’s substantial funding support to UNSOS, which provides non-lethal logistical support to the SSF including food rations, fuel, tentage, communication equipment and life-saving medevac support. UNSOS also provides essential capacity building training to SSF personnel to enable them to effectively take over security responsibilities.
In 2024, UK funding to the SSF Trust Fund enabled UNSOS to deliver 6,000 tons of food rations and 2,000 tons of diesel fuel to the SSF, as well as providing casualty evacuations (casevac) for hundreds of wounded personnel. The latest contribution will be an added boost to this essential logistical support.
UNSOS, currently supports 18,900 SSF personnel and requires adequate funding to scale up the numbers to 20,900 in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2767 of December 2024.

Speaking at a high-level pledging conference on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf praised Somalia’s progress — from debt relief to winning a seat on the UN Security Council — but cautioned that al-Shabaab continues to menace the country.
“Somalia cannot shoulder this burden alone,” Youssouf said. “Without urgent, predictable, and sustainable financing, hard-won achievements risk being undone.”
He underscored that the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), launched in January to replace ATMIS, will require $196 million in 2025. The AU, he noted, has already doubled its Peace Fund contribution to $20 million, but called on the UN, EU and other partners to match Africa’s commitment.
Youssouf stressed that AUSSOM will be the AU’s final mission in Somalia — designed not as an open-ended deployment, but as a bridge to full Somali ownership of its security. “Together, let us ensure Somalia’s future is defined by hope, not relapse,” he said.
