Uganda Says Troops Will Stay in Somalia After ATMIS Operation

Monday ,April 22, 2024 {HMC} The Ugandan government has said that its troops will remain in Somalia, even if the ATMIS peacekeeping mission ends.

Nathan Mugisha, the deputy chief of operations of the Ugandan forces in Somalia, said that the Ugandan forces will continue to operate in Somalia, which he noted is part of the proposal after the ATMIS operation.

“Uganda will be here in any form,” he told reporters, adding that the Security Council asked them to stay in Somalia, and he said they accepted.

This officer said that Al-Shabaab took advantage of the reduction in the number of ATMIS troops and launched attacks on ATMIS bases, saying that they have regained the captured land.

The Ugandan commander also told Sunday Monitor that even if the UPDF is expelled from the new forces, it will continue its presence in Somalia to secure their supplies and equipment.
